Leonardo: United a test for everyone

Leonardo: United a test for everyone

Milan coach Leonardo has challenged his players to rise to the challenge posed by Manchester United.

Both teams are set to square off in the first-leg of the Champions League second round tie at San Siro on Tuesday.

Milan have a slight psychological advantage over United as the English side have never won in Milan in four visits.

2007 was the last time both teams met and United were beaten by Milan 3-0 in Italy.

"This team is rounded with a little of the old and a little of the new," said Leonardo.

And when asked to reveal which side Milan would show, the Milan coach replied: “That's a beautiful question. I believe that there isn't so much an old or a new Milan.

“Right now there is need of everything. We have to unite experience with quality: technique, teamwork and entertainment.

“We are under examination every day. I believe that it's a very important stage both for those who have already won something and the youngsters who have come through the ranks.

“It's an opportunity to remain at the highest level, to measure ourselves against the best. It's a test for everyone.”

Finally Leonardo turned his attention to David Beckham who faces his former club for the first time since he left Old Trafford in 2003.

Leonardo has admitted that it was his decision to bring Beckham back and did not reveal whether the midfielder will start against his old club.

“Because he (Beckham) is important. Because he is part of the club's direction. It was my decision to have him again." said Leonardo.

“David is important in the dressing room. He has charisma. He is intelligent and a great player who can make Milan's play more compact.

“We have 180 minutes to decide who goes through. But not conceding a goal and hurting the English would be ideal,” Leonardo concluded.
