Pique really wants Madrid semi-final
After beating Shakhtar Donetsk 5-1 , Barcelona's Gerard Pique is eyeing a UEFA Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid.
On Tuesday night, Real Madrid put one foot into the semi-finals of the Champions League after a comprehensive 4-0 first leg victory over Tottenham.
However, Barcelona matched them on Wednesday with a 5-1 thumping of Ukrainian champions Shakhtar Donetsk.
With both teams being in the same side of the knockout round draw, an El Clasico semi-final is looking increasingly likely, and Pique admits that is a prospect he is relishing.
"Everyone wants this [Barcelona-Real semi-final] because there is a lot of rivalry between the teams," Pique said to Sky Sports after the game.
"Barca and Real are really good teams, two of the most important in Europe, and if we both qualify, then it will be a great game."
However, Pique was also quick to affirm that the semi-final tie was not a foregone conclusion yet, despite the commanding position both Spanish clubs find themselves in.
"I think we have to concentrate on ourselves."
"We did a great job and I think we have to focus on our job and try to do better, and if we can go to the semi-finals and we can play against them [Real] it will be a great game.
Pique, who scored Barcelona's third goal on Wednesday night also admitted the impressive scoreline had not been expected prior to kickoff.
"They [Shakhtar] are a great team and it's always difficult to play against them."
"I think we played really well and 5-1 is a great score to [bring] to Ukraine [for the second leg]."
Despite the winning margin, Shakhtar were not completely outclassed during the match, and posed a constant threat to Victor Valdes' goal.
Pique was full of praise for Shakhtar's Brazilian attacking quartet, comprising of Willian, Douglas Costa, Jadson and Luiz Adriano.
"They have really good players, good strikers who are really quick; Brazilians with a lot of skils and a lot of quality and I think that we had to work really hard."
"I think that we did a good job [in containing the Shakhtar attack]."
Barca are already scheduled to meet Real in the league on April 16 and in the final of the Copa del Rey on April 20, and a Champions League semi-final clash between the two could result in the mouthwatering prospect of four El Clasic encounters in the last few weeks of the season.
