FIFA Club World Cup - UAE 2009
As the 2009 FIFA Club World Cup is all set to happen next week, we give you a brief history of what the competition is all about.
The FIFA Club World Cup, formerly known as the FIFA Club World Championship, is a football competition contested between the champion clubs from all six continental confederations, although, since 2007, the champions of Oceania must play a qualifying play-off against the champion club of the host country.
The first-ever competition was held in Brazil in January 2000 and featured an all-Brazilian final when Corinthians defeated Vasco De Gama 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out following a goalless encounter.
The competition then went into hibernation for several years due to various contractual reasons, only to emerge again in 2005 when FIFA confirmed it would be hosted by Japan for the next four years.
Brazilian clubs continued their dominance in 2005 as Sao Paulo defeated European Champions Liverpool 1-0 in the final.
The 2006 tournament was again won by a Brazilian club, this time Internacional beat Spanish giants Barcelona 1-0 to lift the trophy.
The 2007 edition saw the end of South American dominance as Italy's AC Milan defeated Argentina's Bocca Juniors 4-2 in a thrilling final.
In February 2008 a FIFA Club World Cup Champions Badge was introduced, featuring an image of the trophy, which the reigning champions are entitled to display on its kit until the final of the next championship.
In 2008 English club Manchester United got their hands on the trophy - the Red Devils beating LDU Quito from Ecuador 1-0.
The 2009 and 2010 competitions are being held in the United Arab Emirates whilst 2011 and 2012 will see the competition return to Japan.
