Estudiantes vs Barcelona Preview
Pep Guardiola is confident Barcelona's record-breaking year will not be tarnished even if they lose against Estudiantes.
Barca play their 64th and final competitive match of an historic 2009 against the Copa Libertadores champions in Abu Dhabi tomorrow, of which the Catalan giants have won 44 and lost just five.
During that time Barca have won all five major trophies they have competed for - claiming an unprecedented treble of Primera Division, Champions League and Copa del Rey last season, and then adding the European and Spanish Super Cups in August.
Now Guardiola and his men can complete the set by winning the Club World Cup for the first time, as well as making up for their defeat to Internacional de Porto Alegre in the 2006 final.
However, even if Barca should come up short against Estudiantes, Guardiola believes their annus mirabilis will remain undiminished.
"This won't condition all that we've achieved," said Guardiola, who concedes life will probably never be as good as this again.
"The future is black, because it will be impossible to do better than we've done. Our obligation is to not stop working."
Lionel Messi, who was struggling with an ankle injury before Wednesday's semi-final against Atlante but came off the bench to score in a 3-1 win, should be fit to face his fellow Argentinians Estudiantes, but Andres Iniesta is out.
The Spain ace has suffered a muscle injury that is likely to keep him sidelined for around two weeks.
Guardiola said of the diminutive playmaker, who along with team-mates Messi and Xavi is among five players competing to be named FIFA World Player of the Year on Monday: "We have other players, but I'm so sorry. He doesn't deserve this, but that's football. He's upset, he's sad."
With regards to opponents Estudiantes, who beat Pohang Steelers 2-1 in their semi-final on Tuesday thanks to Leandro Benitez's double, Guardiola was full of praise.
"I'd not seen them play before and I've been pleasantly surprise. You can sense their character, and there's more to them than running, aggression and tackling," he said
"They are well-organised and have some good tactics, with (Juan Sebastian) Veron and Benitez doing well. (Leandro) Desabato, one of the centre backs, is very strong in the air, and the full backs get involved..."
It seems the respect is mutual as well, with Estudiantes' experienced centre-back Desabato heaping plaudits on the player he is likely to have to try and nullify - Barca striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
"Ibrahimovic is a great striker. Watching him on television is one thing, to see him closer and observe his movements is another. He surprised me, I didn`t think that he had such good ball skills," said Desabato, who believes Barca have the quality to cope with Iniesta's absence.
"He's a great player who contributes a lot to the team," he added on the Barcelona website.
"That could affect the team, but Barca do not depend only on this player. As they have so many other great players maybe they won`t notice it so much."
Alejandro Sabella's men are looking to become the first Argentinian side to win the Club World Cup.
