England vs Bulgaria Preview

England manager Fabio Capello is encouraged by Wayne Rooney's return to goalscoring form ahead of the clash against Bulgaria.

The Manchester United forward ended a five-month wait for a goal when he converted a penalty against West Ham last weekend, and the Italian was glad to see his talisman on the scoresheet.

"I monitored him during the last game that he played against West Ham," said Capello.

"He's good, he's back and I'm happy because he scored a goal.

"Rooney runs a lot around the pitch, he's free to move where he decides to go. Rooney will play tomorrow in style."

Capello is closing on finalising his starting XI, with Everton defender Phil Jagielka set to start despite suffering with an ankle injury in recent days.

"The keeper, (Joe) Hart, Rooney, Steve (Gerrard), (Gareth) Barry, (Ashley) Cole, (Glen) Johnson, Jagielka, more or less. I know 10 or 11, with a little doubt about one," Capello confirmed.

Bulgaria are preparing for life after Dimitar Berbatov following the striker's retirement from international football in May after the country's failure to qualify for the World Cup.

The Manchester United frontman scored 48 times in 78 international appearances and his absence will leave a big hole to be filled by coach Stanimir Stoilov.

Bulgaria have failed to reach the finals of the last three major tournaments, but have a decent record against England, securing two draws against the Three Lions the last time they were paired together, in qualifying for Euro 2000.

Defender Craig Morgan is a slight doubt for Wales' opening Group G qualifier in Montenegro.

Manager John Toshack revealed today the 25-year-old suffered a foot injury in training earlier this week.

Toshack is hopeful the problem is not serious and that Morgan, who has started the last five internationals, will be in contention to play at Podgorica's Gradski Stadium.

"He is the only doubt at the moment," said Toshack.

"I think he'll be okay. He went for an X-ray yesterday morning and it didn't show anything important.

"Hopefully he will be able to train today. He was able to do some running yesterday - no contact with the ball at all - but hopefully he will come through okay."

Wales have not featured in the finals of a major tournament since 1958 but begin their latest attempt to qualify for one with optimism.

Toshack has blooded a number of youngsters during his five years in charge and there is a feeling they could come of age during the coming campaign.

Montenegro will be without Fiorentina midfielder Stevan Jovetic (knee), and while absence will be keenly felt, coach Zlatko Kranjcar is still expecting to come away with the three points against the Welsh.

"Jovetic was one of the most important players in my plans," he said.

"It is a different team with and without him, but we have enough quality to get a positive result against Wales."
