Liechtenstein vs Spain Preview

Xavi insists Spain will be treating Liechtenstein with plenty of respect in their Euro 2012 clash.

Spain make the trip to Vaduz for their opening Euro 2012 qualifier with confidence sky-high after this summer adding the World Cup to the European crown they won in Austria and Switzerland two years ago.

Those two titles have come during a remarkable period of success for the Iberian nation, which has seen them victorious in 51 of 56 matches since 2006, whilst losing just twice.

They are also number one in FIFA`s world rankings, 140 places above Liechtenstein, and have won all four of their previous encounters with tomorrow`s opponents , scoring 13 times and conceding none.

Everything is therefore pointing to a convincing Spanish victory at the Rheinpark stadium, but Barcelona schemer Xavi knows they cannot afford to be complacent.

"It`s not going to be a stroll playing against Liechtenstein. These days everything is more even. We know that in theory they are an inferior rival and we are the favourites, we are against any side, especially since we`ve been champions, but it`s not going to be a stroll," Xavi said today.

"Spain always respect any opponent and we will try to do as well as possible."

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque, whose side played out a 1-1 friendly draw with Mexico in their only game since beating Holland in the World Cup final in July, added: "We`ve seen some of Liechtenstein's games. There are an organised team, who fight, are united and are physically strong.

"Any team with these qualities can make life difficult for another team.

"It could be that goal difference (in the group) will be vital. The first thing we have to do is win, return to playing in competition, and respect all our opponents."

Del Bosque was giving little away as to what his starting line-up might be tomorrow night.

He is definitely without Barcelona captain Carles Puyol, who withdrew from the squad through injury earlier this week, but otherwise has a strong squad to choose from - including, according to the former Real Madrid coach, Andres Iniesta and Fernando Torres.

World Cup final goal hero Iniesta suffered an ankle knock in training while Liverpool forward Torres, who underwent two knee operations at the back-end of last season, was rested from yesterday`s session.

"All those that have come here are in good shape. Torres not training yesterday was a precautionary measure and Andres only suffered a blow from which I don`t think any problem will arise," Del Bosque said

"We have enough possibilities to make a good team from the 21 players that we have.

"We are ready to start the qualification, we are starting from zero, as if we hadn`t played in the World Cup, and our challenge is to get through to the finals in Ukraine and Poland."

Liechtenstein coach Hans-Peter Zaugg is missing Stefan Buchal through illness and left out quartet Thomas Beck, Christoph Biedermann, Benjamin Fischer and Wolfgang Kieber from his squad.

Liechtenstein have lost 16 of their last 19 competitive matches and have not tasted victory since downing Iceland 3-0 back in October 2007.

Aside from Spain and Liechtenstein, the other three nations in Group I are Czech Republic, Scotland and Lithuania.
