Blanc: We did not deserve to lose
France coach Laurent Blanc believes his team were unlucky to lose their Euro 2012 qualifying game against Belarus.
The French went down by a goal to the East Europeans despite dominating most of the game. This was the new coach's first competitive game in charge of Les Blues and fans would have wanted for a far better result.
After the shambolic display on and off the pitch at the World Cup in June, there was hope that Blanc would start with a clean slate and usher in a new era for the 1998 World Champions.
However, the scope of the challenge facing Blanc was laid bare as the French failed yet again to carve out any good scoring opportunities despite dominating possession.
The coach admitted as much but still felt his side did not deserve to lose.
He told TF1:"We lacked effectiveness in front of goal, and in football the most difficult thing is to score goals.
"When you do not succeed [in scoring], we must ensure that we do defensively. On one of their rare forays, they scored. This is unfortunate because throughout the game we did not deserve to lose, but it is so.
Belarus scored through Syarhey Kislyak with just two minutes remaining in the game.
"There is a match on Tuesday [in Bosnia], and we will prepare to earn points. We will come out of this downward spiral. But we must score and realise that in this France team, the top scorers are Florent Malouda and Louis Saha with four goals," added Blanc.
"In the production of the game I have some satisfaction, but we must conclude that by scoring."
Although the game against Bosnia looks easy on paper, nothing can be guaranteed given the chaos prevalent in the French camp. If they fail to win, failure to qualify for the Euros would be a real possibility.
That might just be an even bigger disaster than the World Cup was.
