Cassano eager to end Azzurri hell

Antonio Cassano said he wants to "make up for lost time" after starring in Italy's 2-1 Euro 2012 qualifying win away to Estonia.

The controversial Sampdoria striker told reporters at a press conference at the Coverciano training ground: "My adventure with the Azzurri has been a disaster, but it was my fault. Now I want to make up for lost time."

Cassano famously fell out with former Italy coach Marcello Lippi and was not part of the squad who failed so spectacularly to defend their World Cup crown in South Africa.

However, new head coach Cesare Prandelli reinstated the player in his first game in charge, which was a friendly match against the Ivory Coast in August, and in Friday night's opening Euro 2012 qualifying game where Cassano scored one and setup another as Italy won 2-1 against Estonia.

"Lippi? I don't want to think about the past or stir up controversy over Lippi. Prandelli is here now and I have a fantastic rapport with him," Cassano replied to journalists.

"Prandelli gave importance to treating me like a person and for that I will always thank him."

"I have had incredible disasters in previous years at a great cost," said Cassano. "But (his wife) Carolina has changed my life."

The former Roma star made his debut with Italy in 2003 but has only featured in two major international tournaments for the Azzurri since then.

Italy next play the Faroe Islands on Tuesday.
