Goaless stalemate at Prague

Goaless stalemate at Prague

Genoa will have to beat Valencia in their final Europa League Group B fixture if they are to be certain of reaching the last 32.

The Serie A side had goalkeeper Alessio Scarpi to thank for keeping their future in the competition in their own hands as he made several crucial saves to keep a valuable clean sheet in the Czech capital, where the home side had two goals disallowed.

The draw ends Slavia's slim hopes of reaching the knockout phase and means Genoa can secure their place in the next round with a win over their Spanish opponents on December 17 while a draw would only be enough if Slavia were to do them a favour by beating Lille.

Defeat at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris would see Genoa exit the competition.

Genoa coach Gian Piero Gasperini made eight changes to the side which beat Sampdoria 3-0 on Saturday night, giving Alessio Scarpi his second appearance in the Europa League this season instead of regular goalkeeper Marco Amelia.

And Scarpi was to be Genoa's hero on the night with a string of magnificent saves denying Prague and giving Genoa hope of reaching the last 32.

His first telling intervention came in the 44th minute when he denied Adam Hlousek with a fine save before Stanislav Vlcek sent the rebound wide with the goal gaping.

Vlcek did have the ball in the back of the net on the half-hour mark, but the goal was ruled out for a marginal offside decision.

Genoa's best chance of the first half landed to Hernan Crespo in the 25th minute when his shot was saved by Deniss Romanovs and again, on the stroke of half-time, a header from the Argentinian striker tested the Slavia goalkeeper.

Scarpi then took centre stage once again in the 64th minute to deny Stephan Kores, whose 10-yard volley was pushed away by the Genoa goalkeeper with his out-stretched arm.

And there was drama in stoppage time as Slavia had the ball in the back of the net for the second time on the night, but Hlousek's strike was this time ruled out for a foul by Marek Suchy on Scarpi.
