Toulouse 1-0 Partizan Belgrade

Toulouse 1-0 Partizan Belgrade

Toulouse set up a winner-takes-all clash with Club Brugge in their final Europa League game by posting their second Group J win at the expense of Partizan Belgrade.

Daniel Braaten netted the game's only goal nine minutes into the second half to move TFC onto seven points, one behind Brugge who drew 0-0 at pool winners Shakhtar Donetsk.

The results mean the second team to advance to the last 32 alongside Shakhtar will be decided when Brugge and Toulouse meet in Belgium in a fortnight's time.

Toulouse mustered the first half-chances of the game this evening with a shot from Ricardo Paulo Machado which was comfortably caught by Partizan goalkeeper Mladen Bozovic and an Etienne Capoue header which drifted over the bar.

Adem Ljajic tried his luck for the visitors in the 18th minute but his weak effort from 30 yards was easily dealt with by TFC stopper Olivier Blondel.

Michel Luan also let fly with a speculative attempt for the hosts midway through the first half only to see his blast blocked by Ljubomir Fejsa.

Bozovic had to be on his toes in the 28th minute to tip a cross from Albin Ebondo around the post and deny Toulouse the opener.

Partizan, rooted to the foot of the pool standings having picked up no points, tested Blondel five minutes before half-time with a shot from Sinisa Stevanovic.

Partizan defender Srdjan Knezevic was then teed up by Adem Ljajic but mis-hit his long-range shot wide as the teams went in at the interval goalless.

The deadlock was broken nine minutes after the restart, Braaten heading Machado's inswinging corner high into the centre of Bozovic's net to put Toulouse a goal to the good.

Nemanja Tomic got in a vital block three minutes later to prevent Mathieu Berson's 20-yard shot from testing Bozovic as the Ligue 1 outfit looked to stretch their lead.

Tomic almost laid on the equaliser at the other end in the 66th minute, his corner finding the head of Cordova Cleo only for Blondel to brilliantly tip around the post for a corner.

But any addition to the scoreline thereafter looked more likely to come at the other end.

Ahmed Soukouna and Machado fired over the bar while Michel Luan and Machado saw efforts caught by Bozovic.

The second goal was not forthcoming but it did not matter, with the points already in the bag.
