La Liga side Real Mallorca are set to appeal their expulsion (on financial grounds) from the Europa League next season.

Mallorca have also been asked to review their licence to compete in domestic football, according to reports from Spain.

Governing body UEFA took the decision to disqualify the Islanders from European competition next season, after releasing the following statement.

"On the basis of all expert reviews which have been undertaken, the Control and Disciplinary Body ruled that the club does not fulfil the necessary admission criteria (Article 2.07 of the Regulations of the UEFA Europa League), as the licence of the club was not granted in accordance with the UEFA Club Licensing Regulations, 2008 edition, and the club has not fulfilled its obligations as defined in these regulations."

Mallorca's lawyer, Luis Huerta, has explained that the club is already compiling a defence to display before the UEFA's disciplinary body in order to retain its European licence.

He indicated that since Mallorca were granted a licence by the Spanish federation and had demonstrated how they were going to tackle financial problems by going into administration, there should be no reason to exclude them from European competition.

He was confident that there would be a change in the situation, claiming that, "The decision to keep us [Mallorca] out of the Europa League is surprising because once the RFEF granted us the licence, we settled this matter."

"The first thing we ask is that we check the granting of all licenses granted by UEFA for Spanish football."

He continued, "On Friday July 23, RFEF (Spanish football Federation) erroneously granted the license after five months to process all the documentation, and we wonder if the RFEF is wrong not only with Mallorca, but also other clubs. We are reviewing our licence."

Huerta also added that team was expecting cash injections in the coming weeks from ticket sales and sponsors. Mallorca are currently set to be replaced by Villareal, who finished two spots below them in seventh place in last season's La Liga.

However, by excluding a club on the basis of debt and financial irregularities, UEFA could be setting a dangerous precedent, especially considering the rumoured financial predicament of many larger European teams.
