FA Cup First Round Previews

FA Cup First Round Previews

Here is a look at the first round previews from the world's oldest Cup competition - the FA Cup.

AFC Telford v Lincoln City

Telford manager Rob Smith is sweating on the fitness of striker Andy Brown.

The club's top-scorer is "very doubtful" with a rib injury and could join suspended midfielder Gavin Horan on the sidelines. "I don't know what we'll do if he doesn't make it," Smith admitted.

Lincoln boss Chris Sutton has warned the Imps not to underestimate their non-league opponents.

"I think over the years they've caused a few upsets and last year were unlucky to lose to Southend, so they'll think they're in with a chance," said Sutton.

Accrington Stanley v Salisbury

Accrington boss John Coleman could ring the changes.

With only one win in five, Stanley need a confidence boost from this match and Coleman could draft Sean McConville into midfield. John Mullin (ankle), Leam Richardson (groin) and Chris King (knee) will all miss out.

Salisbury have been hit with swine flu before the trip north, with on-loan midfielder Joe Oastler struck down.

But they have been boosted by QPR's decision to allow on-loan defender Lee Brown to play.

Aldershot v Bury

Jason Dodd will take charge of Aldershot for the final time.

Dodd will return to Southampton after the first-round tie to join his former club's academy. Striker Marvin Morgan returns from injury in time to help his manager bid to finish on a winning note.

Bury are facing an injury crisis with six players, including strikers Andy Morrell and Andy Bishop, sidelined.

Andy Knill's efforts to draft in replacements have failed as clubs do not want players cup-tied while on loan.

Barnet v Darlington

Barnet boss Ian Hendon could be without Ryan O'Neill and Joe Devera.

O'Neill missed last weekend's defeat at Chesterfield with an ankle injury while Devera picked up a thigh strain. But Plymouth will allow on-loan winger Yanick Bolasie to play on the left.

Darlington defender Ian Miller appears to have lost his race to be fit after suffering concussion when the two sides met in the league two weeks ago.

Barnet won that match 3-0 and the list of injuries facing manager Steve Staunton could make a repeat hard to avoid.

Bromley v Colchester

Bromley are battling several injury problems.

Warren McBean, the club's top scorer, has a hamstring problem, while Ryan Hall and Jerome Sobers are both out.

Colchester boss Aidy Boothroyd will have to do without West Ham's Josh Payne as the Hammers have refused permission for the midfielder to play.

But the Us' four other loanees, Kevin Lisbie, Danny Batth, John-Joe O'Toole and Kayode Odejayi, have all been cleared to play by their parent clubs.

Carlisle v Morecambe

England Under-20 midfielder Adam Clayton could make his Carlisle debut after Manchester City gave him permission to play.

With defender David Raven still out and captain Paul Thirlwell also injured, Clayton could be needed to step in.

Carlisle will hope to take advantage of Morecambe's goalkeeping crisis, as Scott Davies is set to make a rare start. Davies is needed as Barry Roche is battling injury and Doncaster have refused on-loan Ben Smith permission to play.

Ian Craney is back in contention following a spell on the sidelines with flu, but Will Haining is still not ready to return from his hamstring injury.

Chesterfield v Bournemouth

Chesterfield manager John Sheridan is hoping to have winger Wade Small back in contention to face Bournemouth.

Small has missed the last five matches due to a hamstring injury, but is closing in on a return and could feature in the first-round tie.

David Perkins has been cleared to play by Colchester, but fellow loanee Donal McDermott has returned to Manchester City.

Sammy Igoe is poised for a return to Bournemouth's line-up after missing the last nine games with injury.

That is a huge relief to boss Eddie Howe after Mark Molesley was this week ruled out for two months.

Grimsby v Bath City

Grimsby must do without suspended duo Olly Lancashire and Peter Sweeney against Bath City.

Lancashire was sent off last week against Accrington, while Sweeney has collected five yellow cards.

Grimsby have been knocked out of this competition at the first attempt in all but two seasons since 2000.

Bath are hoping striker Kaid Mohamed passes a late fitness test to help them keep up the Mariners' miserable run.

"We're running into some form and looking forward to the challenge," said Bath boss Adie Britton.

Gillingham v Southend

Cash-strapped Southend go into their clash with Gillingham desperate to move into the second round.

The Shrimpers narrowly avoided going into administration this week over a tax bill in excess of £2million and need the cash.

Manager Steve Tilson has been handed a boost with veteran striker Dougie Freedman this week returning to training.

Gillingham are set to hand a debut to new signing Febian Brandy when they host Southend.

Brandy arrived on a three-month loan from Manchester United on Thursday and will go straight into Mark Stimson's squad for the game at Priestfield.

Hartlepool v Kettering

Hartlepool look set to be without a several key players against Kettering.

James Brown continues to struggle with the knee injury he sustained in Pools' 1-0 win against Tranmere.

Ritchie Jones (thigh) and Leon McSweeney (foot) are also struggling.

Kettering boss Mark Cooper played for Hartlepool in 1996-97, and has also won here in the FA Cup as a manager with Tamworth.

But he will face a tough time if both Ian Roper and Lee Fowler fail fitness tests.

Hereford v Sutton United

Hereford manager John Trewick will be able to call on four of his five loan players for the potential banana skin tie against Sutton.

Defenders Danny Blanchett and Darren Dennehy, midfielder Jonny Godsmark and striker Craig King have all been granted clearance to play by their parent clubs.

But Swindon's Mark Marshall must sit the game out.

Karim El Salahi will come back into Sutton's side after suspension and skipper Jason Goodliffe is also back from injury.

Luton v Rochdale

Richard Money takes charge of Luton for the first time hoping to have both defender Fred Murray and midfielder Andy Burgess back in action.

The duo could return for Luton after coming through a midweek reserve game unscathed.

Murray has had a foot problem while Burgess was sidelined with a hamstring injury.

Rochdale have a goalkeeper crisis as they prepare to head south, with Kenny Arthur struggling with a back injury and Matt Edwards out with a fractured wrist.

That could see youth-team stopper Danny Taberner called into action.

MK Dons v Macclesfield

MK Dons defender Danny Swailes is a doubt to face his former club when Macclesfield visit stadium:mk.

Swailes played his first 90 minutes of the season against Bristol Rovers last weekend after a long injury, but has now been struck with illness in a cruel twist.

Macclesfield could be without Nat Brown and Ricky Sappleton.

Brown is struggling with a thigh strain, while Sappleton has been battling an infection.

Northampton v Fleetwood Town.

Northampton will be without winger Ben Marshall.

Marshall was recalled by Stoke this week so Ian Sampson will hand Liam Davis his first start of the season.

Middlesbrough right-back John Johnson has been given permission to play.

Fleetwood manager Micky Mellon has received mixed team news ahead of the trip.

Striker Adam Warlow is available again, but new signing Steven Torpey is cup-tied having already featured for Telford.

Oldham v Leeds

Luciano Becchio could make a surprise return when Leeds head across the Pennines to Oldham.

The Argentinian has been out of action since October with an ankle problem, but could replace the cup-tied Sam Vokes, on loan from Wolves.

Max Gradel is also ineligible, while Tresor Kandel is banned.

Oldham boss Dave Penney is likely to hand debuts to goalkeeper Darryl Flahavan and left-back Lee Hills.

The duo arrived on loan from Crystal Palace this week and will go straight into Penney's squad to face the League One leaders.

Oxford United v Yeovil

On-loan Tottenham trio Steven Caulker, Ryan Mason and Jon Obika have been cleared to play against Blue Square Premier leaders Oxford.

Swansea's Wales Under-21 midfielder Shaun MacDonald has also been given the green light by his parent club.

But the Glovers will be without suspended midfielder Jean-Paul Kalala.

Oxford have released defender Shane Killock and winger Alex Rhodes ahead of the match.

Manager Chris Wilder has also agreed to let wing-back Chris Carruthers extend his loan at Blue Square Premier rivals York.

Port Vale v Stevenage

Adam Yates could be the man to replace Sam Stockley when Port Vale face Stevenage.

Stockley, 32, has been forced to retire with an eyesight problem, despite starting 11 games this season, including last week's draw with Dagenham.

Forward Lewis Haldane has been granted permission to play by parent club Bristol Rovers, just days after extending his loan stay at Vale Park.

Stevenage manager Graham Westley is unlikely to make many changes to his side.

Westley's hand has been forced by injuries to several players, with striker Lee Boylan still suffering with a knee injury that has kept him out for the last six matches.

Shrewsbury v Staines Town

Shrewsbury manager Paul Simpson will have to reshuffle his side for the visit of non-league Staines.

Loan signings Jamie Devitt and Waide Fairhurst are out, although West Brom midfielder Joss Labadie can feature.

Right-back Dean Holden is banned after reaching five yellow cards.

Staines boss Steve Cordery has a fully-fit squad as his side aim to extend their run.

"We will need to play at our very best and hope Shrewsbury have an off day," Cordery said. "Hopefully we can get a bit of luck too."

Stockport v Tooting and Mitcham

Liam Bridcutt and Nicholas Bignall have both been granted permission to play for Stockport.

Chelsea midfielder and Reading forward Bignall have been cleared by their parent clubs to take part.

Hatters manager Gary Ablett is hoping for a confidence boost after three straight defeats.

Their Ryman League Premier opponents have a clean bill of health for the match, but Jason Henry is suspended.

Stourbridge v Walsall

Stourbridge manager Gary Hackett has to make some big decisions as the club head into the biggest game in their 133-year history.

Hackett must decide who will take over from injured defender Alex Cowley, who fractured his foot in the previous round against Buxton.

Walsall manager Chris Hutchings has received bad news on the eve of the match.

Richard Taundry is facing another two weeks out with a hamstring problem, while Tim Cooney will start in goal as Rene Gilmartin is injured and on-loan Mark Oxley cannot play.

Torquay v Cheltenham

Goalkeeper Scott Bevan is set to return to the starting line-up for Torquay.

Bevan will be recalled as Southampton do not want on-loan goalkeeper Michael Poke to be cup-tied.

But League One Saints have given winger Jake Thomson the green light to play against the Robins.

Lee Ridley returns for Cheltenham after a calf problem.

On-loan duo Frankie Artus and Tom Denton have been granted permission to feature by parent clubs Bristol City and Huddersfield respectively.

Tranmere v Leyton Orient

Tranmere caretaker-boss Les Parry has doubts over Ian Goodison and Shaleum Logan.

Veteran Jamaican centre-half Goodison is struggling with a stiff neck and faces a race against time to prove his fitness.

On-loan full-back Logan has been cleared to play by parent club Manchester City, but could miss out after tweaking his groin in training.

Orient will be without loan duo Luke Summerfield and Andros Townsend as Plymouth and Tottenham have turned down permission for them to play.

The Os also have a major doubt over centre-half Tamika Mkandawire following his recent concussion.

Wycombe v Brighton

Wycombe face an anxious wait over midfielder Scott Davies.

On-loan Reading man Davies scored two stunning goals against Walsall last week, but the Royals are taking their time deciding whether to let him play.

Forward Stuart Beavon remains sidelined after groin surgery.

Brighton will be without Arron Davies after Nottingham Forest denied him permission to play.

Caretaker-boss Martin Hinshelwood could call on wideman Dean Cox, who fell out of favour under previous manager Russell Slade, in place of Davies.

York v Crewe

Crewe have been given the go ahead to hand Steve Phillips his debut.

The goalkeeper joined Alex on a three-month loan from Bristol Rovers this week and is set to start ahead of Adam Legzdins and Steve Collis.

Caretaker-boss Dario Gradi is keen to have some experience in goal.

York will be without key defender Djoumin Sangare for the match with a groin injury.

A virus swept through the club last week, but most players have now recovered.

SUNDAY

Wealdstone v Rotherham

Nicky Law is available again for Rotherham, but fellow midfielder Micky Cummins is still out.

Law missed last weekend's 0-0 draw with Aldershot with the flu, but is back to full health.

Cummins is facing at least a month on the sidelines after aggravating a groin injury in training.

Wealdstone hope Alan Massey and Kieron Forbes will be passed fit for the match.

But Greg Ngoyi is definitely ruled out after being sent off against Aylesbury last time out.
