Serie A Team of the Week 01

Serie A Team of the Week 01

Serie A took on a South American flavour this weekend as Kelvin Leong drools at the magnificent samba brigade in Italy.

Leonardo's AC Milan side managed a home win over Roma but it was Internazionale's barnstorming trashing of Genoa that was the highlight of the weekend.

Fernando Muslera - Lazio

Uruguayan shot-stopper, Muslera had to deny red-hot Sampdoria with some magnificent saves throughout the game to give Lazio a credible point at the Stadio Olimpico. But to be fair, the visitor's goalkeeper, Luca Castellazzi also had an outstanding game.

Maicon - Internazionale

The best right-back in the world at the moment? No one would dare argue that fact if they witnessed how the Brazilian terrorised a shell-shocked Genoa side with his pace and artistry down the flank. Capped off a sensational performance with a goal.

Francesco Matuzalem - Lazio

The giant midfielder outplayed the Doria midfield with a fine passing game. Even found time to lash in the goal which gave Lazio the slim hope of an upset. Definitely Maztuzalem's best game of the season so far. His only problem is inconsistency.

Christian Panucci - Parma

The veteran defender opted to leave Roma to join a Parma side clearly enjoying their status as a Serie A club again after being thrown to the backwaters of Italian football in recent years. The outspoken defender orchestrated his back-line well while also joining his team in attack. Marcello Lippi will do well to track Panucci for the rest of the season.

Wesley Sneijder - Internazionale

The Dutch midfielder was unwanted at Real Madrid before Jose Mourinho snapped him up and brought him to the San Siro. Sneijder has repaid Mourinho's faith with a stellar first season in Italy with some fine displays as the chief offensive architect of a well-balanced Inter side. Was involved in three of the five goals Inter slammed past a poor Genoa side.

Dejan Stankovic - Internazionale

His wonder goal was the stuff of legends but it was Stankovic's willingness to go the extra mile in midfield which made him stand out against Genoa. The Serb midfielder has been with the Nerazzuri for a long time and is beginning to step up as a leader of the team alongside Javier Zanetti.

Sergio Almiron - Bari

Juventus saw enough in Almiron to bring him to Turin but he never managed to showcase his dynamism. Over at Bari, Almiron has been installed as a key player with probably star-status to the fans and he has risen to the challenge. His opening goal set Bari towards securing a hard-fought away win over the Flying Donkeys.

Fabrizio Miccoli - Palermo

Another member of the Juventus old boys brigade to be thrown into the limelight this weekend was Miccoli. The speedster helped Walter Zenga's Palermo side to their first away win of the season with a well-taken goal to level the score.

Ronaldinho - AC Milan

He was caught partying in Paris again but anyone who has followed the Samba King's career will tell you that it is exactly this carefree and languid personality that makes Dinho the player he is on the pitch. Leonardo needed Dinho to show up after his side were rocked by an early goal from Jeremy Menez and the former Barca ace duly obliged.

Alexandre Pato - AC Milan

‘The Duck' was put under immense pressure to be the star striker for Leonardo's side after the summer exit of compatriot Kaka to Real Madrid. His early season form left much to be desired but was given a chance to prove his doubters wrong and sealed it with a quality strike to give Milan a 2-1 win over Roma. A few more goals and the Milan fans will be quacking to his tune.

Mario Balotelli - Internazionale

The young Italian striker has been criticized for his fiery temperament in recent weeks but with Samuel Eto'o sidelined through injury, Balotelli stepped up to lead the line for Mourinho's side and scored a fantastic goal to cap off a great day for Inter.
