La Liga Team of the Week 01

La Liga Team of the Week 01

Kelvin Leong is awestruck by the immense talent down the wings in the La Liga as he selects the best eleven players of the week.

Real Madrid closed the gap at the top to a mere point after a handsome 4-2 win at the weekend but it was the game between Barcelona and Valencia which highlighted the slick passing game that makes the Spanish top flight such an exciting league to watch.

Victor Valdes - Barcelona

Opposing goalkeepers normally sink to their knees when the final whistle is blown as they try to handle 90 minutes of a Barca onslaught. On Saturday night, Valdes was given a taste of how it feels to be in that situation as Valencia launched wave after wave of attack on his goalmouth. Credit to him, Valdes repelled everything!

Bruno - Valencia

Not many right-backs in the La Liga have come close to nullifying the threat of Lionel Messi in the past three seasons. Bruno of Valencia can put his name amongst that rare breed of players as he kept Messi quiet for the whole game. Great future and definitely one to look out for in the coming months.

Nicolas Pareja - Espanyol

Espanyol's season started with the unfortunate loss of captain, Dani Jarque. Pareja was slotted in as a like-for-like replacement and the young Argentine has shown maturity beyond his years. If the young defender continues his good showing throughout the season, do not rule out Diego Maradona calling him up for a spot at the 2010 World Cup.

Abel Gomez - Xerex

He was not even in the starting line-up but he came on and provided the pinpoint corner kick which Bermejo thumped in to level the score at 1-1. Abel continued to put Villarreal on the back foot with his trickery that will surely guarantee him a spot in the first eleven in upcoming weeks.

Juan Mata - Valencia

Pep Guardiola was rumored to have wanted Mata at the Nou Camp in the summer and based on the young winger's excellent showing against Barca at the weekend, Valencia can expect another stack of cash thrown their way for their prized asset come January.

Pablo Hernandez - Valencia

Mata on the left, Hernandez on the right. If Mata has overtaken David Silva as the numero uno wing wizard at the Mestalla, Hernandez is fast becoming the next one in line for the throne. His pace and mazy runs have given defenders a nightmare this season while also providing the assists for David Villa who sits at the top of the goalscoring chart with seven goals.

Juan Rodriguez - Deportivo La Coruna

A thunderbolt from 30 yards out sealed a 1-0 win against Sevilla but it was Rodriguez's approach play throughout the game that was the difference between the two sides. He did his share of defending but it was the offensive side of his game that made him the star player on the pitch.

Miguel de las Cueva - Sporting Gijon

Two goals to give Gijon an unexpected win away to Atletico Bilbao. One was a stinging free-kick akin to that of Cristiano Ronaldo while the other was a delicate piece of footwork. Gijon will need more of Cueva's goals if they want to avoid a drop down to the Segunda division.

Walter Pandiani - Osasuna

‘The Rifle' was at his best against a hapless Atletico Madrid side. His first goal was a bullet of a header that put an uncanny smile on Madrid coach, Abel Resino's face as if he knew what was to come. Pandiani has proven season after season that he is still one of the best strikers in the La Liga.

Aritz Aduriz - Mallorca

The island-side are sitting comfortably in fifth spot and much of it is down to the fine form of Aduriz. Another two goals from Aduriz saw his side destroy Getafe 3-1. To think Mallorca actually put Aduriz on the transfer list in the summer. Good grief!

Raul Gonzalez - Real Madrid

Raul and Ryan Giggs seem determined to outdo each other week in week out. The living legend of Madrid put in another virtuoso performance with a brace to lead his side to a 4-2 victory against Valladolid at the Bernabeu.
