BPL Heroes and Zeroes 10

Eugene YS Han looks at the hits and misses from the last round of the Barclays Premier League.

HEROES

CHELSEA
Chelsea were clearly the big winners over the weekend. With Arsenal, Man Utd, Man City and Tottenham dropping points, Carlo Ancelotti's men took full advantage to return to the top of the table with a 5-0 win over Blackburn. What will also cheer Ancelotti is the welcome return to form of Frank Lampard who scored for the first time in open play in the league this season. Joe Cole also rejoined the first eleven for the first time since Jan 11. His long-awaited comeback may not be as influential as hoped but even so it would have brought smiles to two Italians - Ancelotti and Fabio Capello. As all cliches go, Joe Cole is like a brand new signing for Chelsea. With big games against Manchester United and Arsenal looming, Ancelotti will be hoping his big guns stay fit and focused.

LIVERPOOL
You could say Liverpool were lucky to beat favourites Manchester United at Anfield. You could also say Jamie Carragher was lucky to stay on the pitch after being outwitted by his buddy Michael Owen. Even David N'gog got a goal with almost the last kick of game. But for Liverpool fans (including one-day-only Ancelotti), the feel-good factor is back. All they care was the victory after the beach ball saga and doubts over Rafa Benitez's future. Still Liverpool will need to improve on one thing and that's consistency. This win may earn bragging rights for a while. But it's still only three points. Liverpool need to do more if they are to join the frontrunners but this could just be the catalyst to reboot their season.

YOSSI BENAYOUN
It's a little unfair to categorise Liverpool a two-man team when you have the unpredictable talents of Yossi Benayoun. The Israel international, playing in the hole behind Fernando Torres, threaded an inch-perfect through ball for Torres to score the Reds' opener against Manchester United. Benayoun's close control and dribbling skills are a joy to watch and sometimes he could tackle quite well too! It's perhaps his work-rate, Benitez's favourite attribute, which is the most impressive of all. With or without the ball at his feet, Benayoun works his socks off. Liverpool haven't had such a playmaker since the departure of Luis Garcia.

BOLTON
Having gave a below-par Man United a run for their money last week, Bolton finally got what they deserved against Everton - a priceless win in the seasonal fight for survival. But they had to do it the hard way. Gary Megson should be credited for the success of two of his new signings. Lee Chung Yong, only just 21 and flying the flag for Asia, gave Bolton the lead while Ivan Klasnic, on-loan from Nantes, scored the winner four minutes before the final whistle.

SYLVAN EBANKS-BLAKE
Sylvan Ebanks-Blake looks to put his injury nightmare behind him after scoring the penalty to help Wolves earn a crucial point against Aston Villa. It was his first-ever Premier League goal. Ebanks-Blake is among the numerous former Manchester United youth players plying their trade in the Premier League. He was a prolific goal-scorer as he helped Wolves gain promotion back to the Premier League last season. And now the club need his goals to avoid going straight back down.

SIMON SIMONSEN
Stoke had Steve Simonsen to thank for keeping a clean sheet against Tottenham. The former Everton and Tranmere goalkeeper only played after first choice goalkeeper, Thomas Sorensen, was ruled out with a virus before kick-off.  Simonsen went on to put up a man-of-the-match display at White Hart Lane.

ZEROES

MANCHESTER UNITED
It was a great chance to deal a fatal blow to Liverpool's fragile title dream but Manchester United blew it. It can be argued that United tend to go full throttle only after December but on current analysis the future does not bode too well. Darren Fletcher's enforced absence disturbed the balance of the side reflecting on the team's reliance on the Scot. While Wayne Rooney are being overworked in attack as he tries to make up for the combined absence of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlo Tevez. Dimitar Berbatov continues to blow hot and cold while Antonio Valencia is not versatile enough to add more attacking dimensions to his play. United have struggled against Sunderland, Bolton but the latter two teams didn't take full advantage like Liverpool did.  Sir Alex Ferguson may have given the hairdryer treatment to referee Andre Marriner but I'm sure in private, he would have roasted his players twice over. He will be looking for a big response against Blackburn next.  If another hiccup happens, heads will definitely roll.

RIO FERDINAND
It's almost criminal to single out an individual for a team's defensive mistakes but Rio Ferdinand's alarming dip in form warrants a mention nevertheless. After a catalogue of mistakes the past weeks (for country and club), Ferdinand was again at fault for Liverpool's first goal when his moment of hesitation gave Fernando Torres the chance to advance one-on-one with Edwin van der Sar and score.  For United boss Ferguson to come out twice to publicly 'ask' his defender to buck up, it really means something serious. Ferguson told The Sun that he is prepared to drop him if Ferdinand does not get his form right. With Jonny Evans waiting on the bench and more than prepared to make the step up, Ferdinand will have to find his form and fast. If he loses his first-team place before December, Fabio Capello could consider dropping the defender altogether for England. Well, at least Michael Owen will have a friend to accompany him come June.

ARSENAL'S DEFENCE
Arsenal's defending, or the lack of it has been their downfall for the longest time in the Premier League. The Gunners thought they did all the hard work by going into a two goal lead against West Ham. But seasoned campaigners will tell you the real hard work comes when protecting the lead. There's no point scoring a lot of goals when you can't keep as many out. Arsenal are still vulnerable at the back despite Thomas Vermaelen turning out to be the signing of the season. The trouble is he is feared as a goal-scorer rather than a defender. The Gunners can't defend when you have players like Alex Song who shoot himself in the foot to concede an avoidable penalty.

JOZY ALTIDORE
Blame it on New Media. Jozy Altidore, who was unhappy at left out of Hull's 0-0 draw with Portsmouth, revealed his omission from the squad on Twitter. The American was left out because he arrived late for the match and he made his feelings known on the social media platform. An upset Phil Brown then revealed the 19-year-old striker will be punished.  He said: "It's going to cost him a lot of money, unfortunately. That for me is information that stays in house. The reason he wasn't on the bench was our business."

PAUL DUFFEN
It's all happening at Hull. Tigers chairman Paul Duffen chose a different way to give a vote of confidence to his Hull manager Phil Brown by comparing him favourably with Rafael Benitez. Should Hull fans laugh or cry?

EMMANUEL ADEBAYOR
The Manchester City striker has yet to find the net in three league games since his return from suspension. Does he believe in karma?
