B'ham vs Man City player ratings
We rate the players in the Barclays Premier League game between Birmingham and Manchester City on Sunday at St. Andrews.
Manchester City
Shay Given - 9
The hero for City today. In addition to foiling McFadden from the spot, the Irish shot-stopper came up with three brilliant saves to deby Birmingham
Joelon Lescott - 5
Was constantly kept under pressure by Cristian Benitez and Cameron Jerome. Could not get forward as often as he would have liked and was reduced to hoofing balls away from the danger area.
Vincent Kompany - 6
Another one who suffered from the attentions of the Birmingham forwards. Did manage to clear a few dangerous balls.
Wayne Bridge - 6
Made some great runs down the left but poor final delivery let him down. Also picked up a senseless yellow card.
Pablo Zabaleta - 6
Had a bruising game, flying in with tackles, getting hit in the face by the ball - full marks for committment, only 6 for performance.
Nigel De Jong - 4
Was having a quiet game when he decided to leave an impression on the match by handling the ball inside the box. Luckily for him, the penalty did not result in a goal. Was substituted two thirds of the way through.
Gareth Barry - 4
For all the hype surrounding him, Barry has yet to deliver a quality performance. Today was another lacklustre display.
Craig Bellamy - 4
With Birmingham players pressing on him all the time, did not have many chances to display his electric pace. A few levels below his breathtaking performance against United all those days ago.
Shaun Wright Phillips - 7
The nuggety midfielder was up to his usual changes of pace and sudden turns. Will be gutted that his quality did not translate into a win for his team.
Roque Santa cruz - 5
The striker's first start in a long time was quiet. Came up against a determined defence and never really got the chance to show off his lethal finishing skills inside the box.
Carlos Tevez - 6
Two passes, one to Bellamy and the other to Wright Phillips in the early stages of the game were absolutely breathtaking and almost unlocked the Birmingham defence. But his form fell away in the second half and he was reduced to scrapping in the midfield.
Substitutes
Stephen Ireland - 5
It was puzzling to see the brilliant Ireland start on the bench. Never got into the game when he came on.
Martin Petrov - 5
Birmingham always looked wary of his left foot. Luckily for them, it had not put on its shooting boot today.
Birmingham
Maik Taylor - 5
Was the less busier of the two keepers. Only had a few straightforward corners and crosses to deal with.
Liam Ridgewell - 7
Dealth well with Tevez'z nagging threat. Was involved in many a penalty box melee and emerged with credit.
Scott Dann - 5
A careless tackle on Tevez and a ridiculous backpass to Taylor could both have resulted in catastrophe. Fortunate not to have cost his team the game.
Roger Johnson - 8
Was gigantic in defence. Had a scary moment when a City player stumbles over him but got right back up and carried on repelling City attacks.
Stephen Carr - 5
Was not very involved in the game.
Barry Ferguson - 6
A good performance that was marred by a sending off deep into second half injury time. Ferguson was at the centre of almost all Birmingham moves. And there were many of them.
Lee Bowyer - 7
Almost made himself a hero with a sweet strike that was saved brilliantly by Given. Tremendous energy in the field throughout the 90 minutes. Bowyer was a nuisance to his opponents on both ends of the pitch.
James McFadden - 3
It might seem unkind - but McFadden cost his team a famous and precious win. His penalty was unusually weak and could not beat a classy keeper like Given. Tried to make up by scoring a spectacular solo but failed. Was subbed soon after.
Sebastian Larsson - 7
Another one of Birmingham's heroes on the night. Was tearing up and down the pitch. Had his control in the box been better, he might well have secured a victory for his team.
Cameron Jerome - 7
Constantly harrased the City defence and never let them settle on the ball. Was let down by poor finishing on a couple of ocassions.
Cristian Benitez - 8.5
Birmingham's player of the night. With a bit of luck and a different keeper in the opposition net, he could well have scored a couple. Definitely a player to look out for.
Substitutes
Keith Fahey - 5
Did not make much of an impact.
Kevin Phillips - 4
Had a great chance late in the game to score for his team. Bottled it miserably. Cameron Jerome, the player Phillips replaced, would have been holding his head in his hands.
