Serie A Team of the Week 03

Serie A Team of the Week 03

It was the weekend of the double as four different players grabbed braces for their respective teams, and Vincent Lai is here to tell you more about it.

Juventus suffered the upset of the week as they fell to Napoli 3-2 in Turin, while Lazio's woes continued in the Italian top flight as their winless run continued with a 1-1 against lowly Siena.

Alessio Scarpi - Genoa

The 36-year-old put up a masterful display this weekend against Palermo, denying Mark Bresciano a goal as he raced out of goal to claim the through-ball. The 14-year veteran made an even more impressive save as he recovered well to palm away Miccoli's shot early in the game after the striker has rounded him up.

Maicon - Inter Milan

The right-back tortured Livorno with his overlapping runs throughout the whole game and came away with a goal in the 80th minute: a left footed effort that sealed the Nerazzurri's win. Oh, and he defended well too.

Christian Maggio - Napoli

The defender did less attacking this week, and focused on shutting down Juventus' wingers when the occasion called for it. Fabio Grosso had difficulty getting in a cross in the presence of Maggio.

Ivan Cordoba - Inter Milan

Who says that Cordoba is over the hill? The centre-back was everywhere as he foiled many of Livorno's forays into the Inter penalty box. The Colombian defender made many a clearance to leave the hosts thoroughly frustrated.

Philippe Mexes - AS Roma

The Frenchman was instrumental in providing a solid defence to allow Roma's midfield and frontline to attack the Bologna penalty box without having to worry about defending the counter-attack. Martins Adailton may have scored in the 32nd minute, but Bologna were relatively quiet after that as Roma grabbed the comeback win.

 Marco Marchionni - Fiorentina

The winger grabbed a brace as Fiorentina thumped Catania 3-1 in a game where both team ended the match with ten men. Marchionni scored early off a Juan Vargas cross to put the home side ahead, and got La Viola the lead in the 69th minute before Alberto Gilardino sealed the game with Fiorentina's third.

Jesús Datolo - Napoli

Datolo's introduction into the game in the 58th minute was a masterstroke by Napoli coach Walter Mazzarri as the left winger crossed the ball into Juventus' box one minute later for Marek Hamsik to score and begin the Azzurri's comeback. Datolo grabbed a goal himself in the 64th minute, then sealed the win in the 82nd minute by providing the cross for Hamsik's second.

Marek Hamsik - Napoli

The Slovakian was Napoli's two-goal hero in their upset of Juventus as he played box-to-box football, terrorizing the Juve midfield, then beating everyone to the Bianconeri penalty area to bother Gianluigi Buffon. Hamsik not only scored, but started moves for the away side and scared the home side with his set-pieces. A truly impressive performance.

Mirko Vucinic - AS Roma

The Montenegrin striker was on top form in the Giallorossi's 2-1 win over Bologna, pouncing on Marco Motta's blocked shot attempt to stab the ball into the back of the net in the 35th minute to equalise for Roma. Vucinic then a nuisance of himself in the Rossoblu penalty area, going close to scoring on no less than three occasions.

Nene - Cagliari

The Brazilian hitman scored two goals in the space of five minutes to give Cagliari a huge advantage in their 3-0 win over Atalanta, his first a result of being at the right place at the right time as Andrea Consigli missed his clearance, and the second off an Andrea Cossu cross for a beautiful finish. Nene could have had a hat-trick in the game if he could keep his shot on target with Consigli rushing out to close him down.

Marco Boriello - AC Milan

Boriello ended his year-long goal drought in style as he scored both goals in Milan's 2-0 win over Parma on Saturday. The striker has had to deal with numerous injuries for the good part of last season, as was relieved to have scored in a rare appearance for the Rossoneri.
