La Liga Team of the Week 04

La Liga Team of the Week 04

Kelvin Leong gives three Valencia players the nod in his La Liga Team of the Week.

Iker Casillas - Real Madrid

The Spanish No.1 is undoubtedly one of the top few goalkeepers in the world. Against Atletico in the Madrid derby, Casillas pulled off a string of amazing saves just when Forlan and Aguero thought they had enough in the tank to steal a point off the Los Merengues.

Luis Felipe - Deportivo

His reputation as a good player is growing week by week and a few more performances like the one he showed against Getafe will definitely earn him a move to a big club in the summer. Defended brilliantly while also scoring Deportivo's second goal to give the visitors a deserved away win.

Alberto Botia - Sporting Gijon

On loan from Barcelona, Botia could be on his way to a recall if Pep Guardiola needs defensive cover. One of the reasons why Gijon have enjoyed a decent start to their La Liga adventure.

Eric Abidal - Barcelona

The versatile Frenchman put in one of his better performances this season against Mallorca. Sheltered Victor Valdes well in defence while also enjoying a good night on the overlap down the left. Needs to be more consistent though.

Robert Pires - Villarreal

Yes he was on the losing side, but anyone who thought Pires joined Villarreal for one last big pay packet as he heads towards the twilight of his career has been proven wrong. His goal to level the game at one apiece was spectacular and the Frenchman seems to be enjoying his time with the Yellow Submarine.

David Albelda - Valencia

There was a time when Albelda was almost thrown out of the Mestalla but under Unai Emery, the midfield hardman has become the same hard-tackling destroyer we loved in the past. His role as holding midfielder is a crucial one with David Silva, Juan Mata and Pablo Hernandez not as good defending as they are when on the offence.

Pablo Hernandez - Valencia

Juan Mata and David Silva are the big-name wingers in Unai Emery's side but Pablo has turned up this season to rival the duo as the top winger at Valencia. Set David Villa up with a sweet assist before getting on the scoresheet himself.

Lassana Diarra - Real Madrid

Rumours of the former Chelsea man being unsettled at Madrid was quashed when he stepped out at the Vicente Calderon to give his paymasters a firm reminder of what he is all about. Covered every blade of grass and never allowed Atletico any time on the ball. Claude Makelele's heir apparent indeed.

Pedro - Barcelona

Every summer, the Catalan giants somehow manage to find and unearth a new star. First it was Xavi, then it was Andreas Iniesta. This season, a new star is born. His name is Pedro. Two goals against Mallorca at the weekend and he is on his way to becoming a household name in Catalunya.

David Villa - Valencia

Manchester United are rumoured to be readying a bid to take Villa and his teammate Silva to Old Trafford come January. At the rate he is going, United will need to break the bank to sign him. Another goal against a stout Zaragoza defence to add to his glowing resume.

Luis Fabiano - Sevilla

The Brazilian striker is scoring goals for fun at the moment. Another brace against Villarreal sank the hearts of the Yellow Submarine fans who thought their team were on the rise. Fabiano's place in Dunga's World Cup team is as good as confirmed.
