West Ham vs Man Utd Player Ratings

We rate the players in the game between West Ham and Manchester United at Upton Park on Saturday.

By Abhishek Mehrotra

West Ham

Robert Green (off 73') - 5

Undone by two fiercely powerful strikes by Paul Scholes and Darron Gibson. Typically flowing moves from United gave him no chance to stop the next two.

Daniel Gabbidon - 3

Taken apart by the United frontmen. Gabbidon had a very poor outing indeed.

Jonathan Spector - 4

Backed off too often when Paul Scholes had the ball. One such ocassion led to the United goal.

Herita Ilunga - 3

Was looking good in his tussle with Antonio Valencia until two lapses led to two United goals.

James Tomkins - 5

Two crucial clearances were the highlights of his day. Had a free header in front of the United goal but hit it straight at Kuszczak

Jack Collison - 3.5

Had a brilliant chance early in the game but was too slow in reading Hines' cross. Giggs kept a lid on him for most of the game otherwise.

Scott Parker - 4

Did not feature much in the game. Should have done a better job of keeping tabs on Scholes.

Junior Stansilas - 3.5

An uncertain performance from the winger. Showed good energy but made the wrong choice on most occasions between passing and shooting.

Radoslav Kovac - (off 67') 3

Barely added anything to West Ham's efforts. Both Scholes and Gibson ran riot in his persence.

Zavon Hines (off 45') - 5

Was giving Gary Neville a torrid time before the veteran defender hobbled off. Hines himself picked up a knock and stayed back on the bench after the first half.

Guillermo Franco -

Substitutes

Alessandro Diamanti - 7

His performance raised questions over why Gianfranco Zola does not give him more starts. Was quite superb with his passing as well as from dead ball situations. Brought the best out of the United custodian.

Kieron Dyer - 5

His first outing in months was not a memorable one. Will need to play a lot more to be back at his best.

Peter Kurucz - 5

Was hardly tested. That was not surprising given that United were already 4 up when he made his appearance.

Manchester United

Tomasz Kuszczak - 7.5

Pulled off some good saves, a flying stop from a Diamanti free kick being the pick of them. He has filled in admirably for Edwin Van der Sar.

Gary Neville (off 34') - 3.5

His injury was perhaps a blessing in diguise for United. Ol' Gary was looking ragged against the pace of Hines.

Darren Fletcher - 7

Slotted in effortlessly in the centre of defence. Kept the likes of Stanislas and Hines at bay.

Wes Brown - 5

While his defensive partner ran into trouble against Hines, Brown had a relatively serene outing.

Patrice Evra - 5

Was not at his best. Crosses did not fizz in with usual frequency and tackles were not as crunchy. Was given the slip by Collison on more than one ocassion.

Paul Scholes - 7.5

His talk of retirment seemed pre-mature after this performance. West Ham kept inviting him to shoot and he kept obliging, finally finding his range at the end of the first half. His enthusiasm in midfield was quite incredible as well.

Darron Gibson - 7 (off 67')

Showed recent talk of Man United's new crop of players is no hyperbole with a magnificent strike. Found defensive holes to get into throughout the match.

Anderson - 6.5

A rare decent match from the plump midfielder. Was in the thick of things throughout, fizzing in balls at pace and causing problems to West Ham's back four.

Antonio Valencia - Maintained his recent surge in form with a goal and an assist. There was no clear winner in his tussle with Valencia until deep into the second half. There was only one winner after that.

Ryan Giggs - 6

Was United's best player in the first half but the sheen wore off his performance in the second.

Wayne Rooney - 6.5 (off 73')

Came into his own in the second half which culminated in a simple tap-in for United's forth.

Substitutes

Michael Carrick - 7

Did a far better job than Neville in leashing the West Ham front line.

Dimitar Berbatov - 7.5

United seemed far more threatening once the big Bulgarian came on.

Michael Owen - n.a

United were a few body lengths away from West Ham by the time he came on.
