La Liga Team of the Week 08
Kelvin Leong reckons Athletic Bilbao have got a gem on their hands in the form of Iker Muniain in the La Liga Team of the Week.
A good player needs only one moment in a game to make an impact. And that was exactly what new kid on the block, Muniain, did against Real Zaragoza. It will not be long before the name Muniain appears on every Bilbao jersey if he continues his stunning rise to stardom.
Andres Palop - Sevilla
He has an aura of calm when he plays between the sticks and that translates onto the Sevilla defenders. Made a few incisive saves to help Sevilla take maximum points at the El Molinon stadium.
Facundo Roncaglia - Espanyol
In the tense atmosphere of a derby, the 22-year-old Argentine defender who is on-loan from Boca Juniors showed enough composure to become the best performer on the field. Solid in defence and dangerous when it comes to dead-ball situations. Put himself in the shop window with a complete display.
Gerard Pique - Barcelona
The former Manchester United youngster is definitely one of the best defenders in the La Liga this season. His partnership with Carlos Puyol has blossomed well and his aerial threat gives the Catalan giants an option in attack.
Joan Capdevila - Villarreal
Capdevila is enjoying a stellar season so far. His overlapping runs have been a highlight of Villarreal's attack while his defence is solid as a rock. Excellent display against Atletico Madrid on Sunday.
Medhi Lacen - Racing Santander
Lacen held his own and rallied his fellow team-mates to come from behind to win against Xerez. Even found time to score a goal while his defensive duties were carried out well.
Lassana Diarra - Real Madrid
Diarra's tireless running and dynamism is an integral part of Manuel Pellegrini's tactics. A perfect example of his importance to the team was displayed in the first-half when he snuffed out the danger posed by Juan Mata which looked like a certain goal had it not been for his intervention.
Jose Luis Marti - Mallorca
Marti was dynamic in midfield for the Islanders as they came out victorious against Osasuna to continue their fine form. The midfielder was involved in almost all of Mallorca's offensive moves and covered every blade of grass on the pitch.
Iker Muniain - Athletic Bilbao
The 16-year-old attacking midfielder came off the bench in the 59th minute to provide two assists for the goals which gave the visitors all three points against Real Zaragoza. Muniain became the youngest goalscorer in the La Liga earlier this season and another stunning appearance this time out could go a long way to securing a starting berth in the coming months.
Juan Angel Albin - Getafe
Two goals to seal a deserved win for Getafe against Tenerife. The Uruguayan playmaker seems to be maturing into a very good forward this season.
Gonzalo Higuain - Real Madrid
Another two goals to add onto his impressive resume as a Los Merengues player. It has come to a point where everyone should stop underestimating this wonderful striker. He is as good as Karim Benzema and Raul if not better.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic - Barcelona
The Swedish hitman is enjoying life at the Nou Camp and has fitted in seamlessly. With Lionel Messi injured, Ibrahimovic took it upon himself to be the focal point in attack and had a great outing against Espanyol. His penalty to win the game was the icing on the cake.
