Serie A Team of the Week 08

Serie A Team of the Week 08

It was truly a week of upsets as none of Italy’s elite clubs managed a win in the sixteenth round of the Serie A.

By Vincent Lai

Juventus, AC Milan and Fiorentina all suffered losses to inferior opposition, while Inter Milan, AS Roma and Sampdoria collected a point each, with the Giallorossi and the Blucerchiati cancelling each other out at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

Jean-Francois Gillet - AS Bari

The Belgian custodian put in a magnificent performance against a much more talented Juventus side. Sure, he let slip a Diego shot for David Trezeguet to pounce on, but the 30-year-old more than made up for the mistake with world class saves against Trezeguet and Christian Poulsen in the later parts of the game.

Gennaro Sardo - Chievo

The right-back may have only played 34 minutes, but he made the most out of that time, elevating above everyone to head home a Luciano free-kick at the far post and shackling Juan Vargas in defence. The Flying Donkeys really got a bang for their buck in Sardo.

Leonardo Bonucci - AS Bari

The versatile defender stuck to his job in the centre of defence for the Biancorossi's upset of Juventus. Bonucci was strong in the air and quick to plug gaps in the backline for this game, and almost scored a goal in the 23rd minute as he headed the ball over the crossbar.

Cesare Bovo - Palermo

The Italian centre-back outshined his larger Dane partner Simon Kjaer for once as he man-marked Milan's Marco Borriello out of the game. Bovo held Palermo's line well as the Aquile ran out 2-0 winners at the San Siro.

Aleksandar Kolarov - Lazio

Kolarov was the Biancocelesti's savior in their match against Genoa as he left Emiliano Moretti in his dust at the edge of the penalty area to fire a goal-seeking missile past Alessio Scarpi. This victory stops the rot for Lazio, grabbing their first away win since October 4.

Marco Bresciano - Palermo

The athletic Australian midfielder played better than the likes Andrea Pirlo, Massimo Ambrosini, Clarence Seedorf and Ignazio Abate as he completely dominated the middle of the park, capping the masterful performance with a well-taken goal in the 62nd minute.

Giampiero Pinzi - Chievo

The on-loan midfielder from Udinese ran his socks off in the Flying Donkeys' upset win over a Fiorentina side stocked with more talent. After Chievo went behind early in the game to a Riccardo Montolivo goal, Pinzi outran and evaded every single La Viola defender to tap in Elvis Abbruscato's cross to equalise for the Ceo.

Sergio Almiron - AS Bari

Another on-loan midfielder, this time playing the club that decided he was not good enough to stay in the squad. Almiron unleashed a 30-yard screamer that flew past the out-stretched Gianluigi Buffon in the 86th minute that put the Galletti up 3-1 up and ended the game at that point.

Fabrizio Miccoli - Palermo

The diminutive striker was a thorn in AC Milan's side all afternoon as he prodded, poked and finally twisted in the knife in the 49th minute as he cut in from the left flank to curl the ball past a stranded Dida.

Barreto - AS Bari

The tricky Brazilian striker managed to ghost past Fabio Cannavaro, forcing the Italian international to scythe him down and concede a spot-kick. Barreto opted to take the penalty himself, converting it to put his own demons to rest, after missing two spot-kicks in the current campaign.

Abdelkader Ghezzal - AC Siena

The Algerian international provided enough buffer space for the Robur in their 2-1 victory over Udinese, scoring in stoppage time to give the cellar-dwellers a two-goal lead that Gaetano D'Agostino's solitary goal a minute later could not erase. The win gave the Bianconeri three important points that enabled them to rise above Catania to 19th in the Serie A standings.
