Serie A Team of the Week 09

Serie A Team of the Week 09

Four matches were postponed due to foul weather, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t find eleven great individual performances to place in the TOTW.

By Vincent Lai

Of the six matches played, the one that stood out most was Juventus' 2-1 upset at the hands of Catania. Jorge Martinez and Mariano Izco scored to give Ciro Ferrara more pressure going into the winter break.

Morgan De Sanctis - Napoli

The veteran custodian was exceptional against Chievo, making a string of saves against Elvis Abbruscato and Michele Marcolini, but saved the best for last as he booted out Simone Bentivoglio's short-range attempt to deny the Flying Donkeys the joy of a consolation goal. Absolutely ruthless and probably enjoying his clean sheet bonus.

Nicolas Burdisso - AS Roma

The on-loan centre-back from Inter did more than his fair share of work as he was at the right place at the right time to stab Rodrigo Taddei's cross home from six yards. Besides the goal, the Argentine defender organised his defence well as the Giallorossi rode out 2-0 winners at the Stadio Olimpico.

Lucio - Inter Milan

Burdisso's former running-mate showed that he wasn't missed at the San Siro as he literally erased Tommaso Rocchi and Julio Cruz (another former team-mate) from the pitch. The field was terribly cold, but the Brazilian centre-back was sambaing on the field as if he was back home in warm Brasilia.

Nicolas Spolli - Catania

Spolli was phenomenal in the first half of the Rossazzurri's 2-1 win over Juve, nullifying the attacking prowess of Amauri and David Trezeguet with ease. The defender gave Gli Elefanti (The Elephants) Jorge Martinez the chance to score from the penalty spot as he was felled by Tiago halfway into the first half.

Mariano Izco - Catania

The Argentine midfielder came on with 30 minutes left in the game and ran his heart out, scoring in the 87th minute to win the game for the Elephants. Izco sprinted forward in a Catania counter and slotted the ball past Alex Manninger to score his first goal in Serie A and help the Rossazzurri record their first win over the Bianconeri since 1963.

David Pizzaro - AS Roma

The playmaker was inspirational for the Lupi as they ran out 2-0 winners against Parma, pulling the strings in many of Roma's forays in the Ducali third. The Chilean international could have scored just before half-time when he dialed long range, but Antonio Mirante was up to the task.

Daniele De Rossi - AS Roma

No offence to Matteo Brighi, who sealed the win for the Lupi late in the game, but De Rossi's constant activity in the midfield, as well as his knack for breaking up Parma's attacks, earns him a place on the TOTW.

Aleksandar Kolarov - Lazio

The Serbian international was a constant thorn in Inter's side as he ran riot on the left flank. Deployed as a left winger, Kolarov was freed of his defensive duties and proceeded to torment the Nerazzurri defence. It's just a pity that his crosses and passes did not materialise into goals, similar to his missile on Julio Cesar's goal just after the hour mark, which was slightly off-target.

Jorge Martinez - Catania

Martinez was a key component in Walter Zenga's plans last season, and continues to be one for new coach Sinisa Mihajlovic. The Uruguayan striker held his own against Fabio Cannavaro and Nicola Legrottaglie, but it was his ice-cold nerves that sent Alex Manninger the wrong way, twice (he was ordered to retake the spot-kick), that gave the Elephants the lead after 23 minutes.

Edinson Cavani - Palermo

The Uruguayan striker was a one-man army against Siena's defence as he orchestrated many of the Aquile's bombardments on the Robur's 18-yard area. It was then fitting that El Matador score the winning goal for the Rosanero, as he left Claudio Terzi in his dust and proceeded to drill the ball past a stranded Gianluca Curci.

Tomas Danilevicius - Livorno

The Lithuanian striker put on his figurative hardhat and put forth his usual hundred percent effort as he scored twice for Livorno to take down high-flying Sampdoria on Sunday. The six foot three inch forward latched onto Cristian Raimondi's header early in the second half to score his first, then hustled his way into position to tap in Davide Marchini's cross in the 93rd minute to complete an improbable comeback win for the Labronici.
