The Fans' Voice: Rovers' season so far
Blackburn fan Mike Delap tells Eugene YS Han his thoughts about Rovers' performance five months into the 2009/10 Premier League season.
Up to this point in the season, what is the best or worst your club can achieve?
Mike Delap: From a Rovers point of view it is quite wide ranging, we could still conceivably qualify for Europe through the league, due to the wide open nature of the division, but that seems a long shot at best. If we are looking a bit more realistically then I would say the best we could hope for would be a safe and trouble-free position somewhere round mid-table in the Premier League... and maybe a Carling Cup triumph?
So far, who has been your key player?
Mike Delap: David Dunn. It is a shame he has been injured for the last six games as he is our spark and our dynamite all in one! Prior to getting injured he was on fire and a treat to watch - lung busting runs, incisive movement and creativity galore.
To me he is basically a top 4 player that gets injured too much, he is that good and no this is not blue and white tinted specs speaking!
Without him Rovers have lost that edge that caused every team trouble and for all the extra jazz Benni McCarthy adds to a side there is no substitute for Dave Dunn, he is one of a kind.

Who is the unsung hero in your team?
Mike Delap: Ryan Nelsen. He very rarely gets any attention from the media and he is not what you would call a "glamour player", in fact he is pretty old school but ever Rovers fan knows his worth. He is the captain and he never shirks the fight or the heat of the battle - he is much like Rovers legend Colin Hendry in that respect.
He is the club captain and has actually been at Rovers now for about five years which is a long time for a player to stay at a club of our perceived "size". He seems to go about his work whilst more appealing players to the media tend to grab the headlines, players such as Dunn, McCarthy and Morten Gamst Pedersen for instance (well back in the days when Pedersen was good that is).
Since Tugay retired he has assumed the mantle of the cult figure.
Yes he is pretty ugly and yes he is limited as a player but that always makes a good unsung hero!
Which new signing has impressed you most? Which one the least?
Mike Delap: The new boy that has impressed me the most is our new French midfielder, Steven N'Zonzi. He seems to be about 8 feet tall and looks very gangly for a cultured midfielder - and the fact he came from a relatively unknown French club and cost £400,000 didn't really strike me as a good sign. But by god he has turned out to be somewhat of a gem.
Big Sam initially expected him to ease his way into Premier League life but he has hit the ground running and is now a first team regular. He has his weaknesses, for example his shooting seems weak but his presence is undeniable and his tackling and passing are top draw as well. Expect Steven to achieve a lot more in football and to probably be playing for an Arsenal or a Liverpool at some point.
At the other end of the pleasure spectrum is Michel Salgado. Now whilst I would say he is hardly terrible and does have some value, he is on £45,000 a week at Ewood Park and that is too much for a man in his mid 30's who plays about ten games a season.
I will not doubt his off-the-field value, I mean what can't you learn from a man who played for Real Madrid for ten years and is a bonafide psycho, but I don't get to see any of that!
All I see is the on-field portion of his input - he is a flair player and he adds value to the side when he is on the pitch. But he runs like he has a handbrake which means most Premier League wingers can glide by him at jogging pace.
Which area do you think your team needs strengthening in January?
Mike Delap: We need a revamp of midfield - a freshening up if you will. The strikers aren't exactly banging them in but to me that is a blip as opposed to a concern, so the midfield it is!
I am sure this won't happen but to me we should sell Morten Pedersen, El Hadji Diouf and Keith Andrews and replace them with better value players. Morten has been frustrating for too long now, Diouf seems to have lost his focus and Keith, whilst ever the trier, is too limited to have a meaningful impact. They need to make way for fresh blood - for example for the money we could get for those three; we could buy Jason Koumas, Michael Tonge and Steve Sidwell, surely an improvement?
We kind of get the feeling though at Rovers, with the lack of useable funds at our disposal, that we will make do with what we have got and press on and try and get the best out of the players that we have got.
But with a bit more insight and adventure, we coudl maybe have a look at trading to improve?
What is 'The Wild Blackburn Rover'?
Mike Delap: The Wild Blackburn Rover is actually a spin off from the work I do for Vital Blackburn, which is part of the Vital Football network.
The Wild Blackburn Rover is a personal insight into my thoughts and topics that surround Blackburn Rovers, every story/update has a unique outlook and an opinion on it - which I think is why it has taken off as well as it has done.
I have only been writing for it for just over two months now. I am glad to say it has proved to be a cult success. I have had over 8,000 hits on the site in two months and I have received acclaim from the Vital network, Rovers fans who like a laid-back, fun read and from the Observer newspaper as well.
I hope it shows what can be done with your love for you football team and a passion to express your thoughts.
