The Fans' Voice: Burnley's season so far
Burnley fan Andrew Smith talks to Eugene YS Han about his team's performance five months into the debut season in the Premier League.
Up to this point in the season, what is the best or worst your club can achieve this coming season?
Andrew Smith: After a great start to the season our early expectations were raised and maybe that's been a problem. Although our away results show 1 point, I feel we have deserved a lot more and it seems like just a matter of time before we get more points on our travels. If we can turn our performances away in to points, then we can finish 10th. If we don't and continue like we are, then we will be looking over our shoulder right to the end.
Are you frustrated that Burnley cannot replicate their excellent home form to their away form? Why do you think this is the case?
Andrew Smith: It is frustrating that our home and away form is so different, but like previously mentioned our performances should have got us more points away. It's hard to put your finger on why we can't replicate our home form when playing away, but there seems to be several reasons. Most fans believe Coyle is stubborn and will only play one way which is to go out and win. In a way it would be good to see us set up tactically for a draw when we are away, but then again due to a lack of top flight experience we could just get beat early in the game and playing negatively could impact on our confidence. Although we have not won away all our players still play with lots of confidence, so I think we should just stick to our guns and the results will come hopefully before it is too late.
So far, who has been your key player?
Andrew Smith: With regards to our key player or unsung hero, then it would be hard to single any player out. We are very much a team and everybody gives everything for each other. The Beast during the early stages of the season was in sensational form and was very much a key player and maybe now it is Chris Eagles. Many fans thought that Eagles would need to break in to the team and show what he is capable of otherwise he might have proved to be a bad signing for the money and hype around his ability. He has however done just that and is looking a very good player.
Which new signing has impressed you most? Which one the least?
Andrew Smith: We brought in a few young lads in the summer, but only three of them have managed to earn their places in the side. Andre Bikey has been played in the centre of defence and midfield, but he is far stronger at the back and will be a big loss when he goes to the African nations cup. Tyrone Mears started the season very brightly and his form has been consistent. In my opinion he has been an excellent signing, but I would now suggest that Fletcher is the signing that has made the biggest impression. It took him a few games to get going, but he just gets better and better every game. He really can become a top class striker.
Which area do you think your team needs strengthening in January?
Andrew Smith: If we are to bring in new players during January, then it needs to be at the centre of defence and/or another goalkeeper. We need a new keeper to either keep Jenson on his toes or to replace him and we have just made too many mistakes at the back. We also lack pace in the middle and with the strikers in this league we just get torn to shreds too often. We did bring in some defenders during the summer, but I don't think they are ready yet.
Where will your club finish this season?
Andrew Smith: At the start of the season I thought we could finish half way and believed that we would not struggle too much to stay up. My opinion has not changed after seeing that there are a few teams worse than us. We might end up closer to the bottom than I first thought, but still believe we will not be too near the bottom. Prediction 13th.
What is Tiptoe Through The Longside?
Andrew Smith: It's is an independent site run by the fans for the fans. Our website has only been running for 18 months or so and we have been slowly building. It is part of the fansonline network which is also fairly new. I run the site for the fans and to earn funds for the football club in different ways. All proceeds from the site are donated to Burnley Football Club to help with the youth development or the Clarets Trust.
