BPL Heroes and Zeroes 22

Eugene YS Han picks out the Heroes and Zeroes from another exiciting week of Premier League football!

HEROES

MANCHESTER UNITED
After surviving some early scares, Manchester United eventually overwhelmed Arsenal at their own backyard with some vintage football. Nani was transformed into Cristiano Ronaldo and for once, his contributions involved creating goalscoring chances instead of wayward shooting and showboating. Wayne Rooney was at his imperial best by defending from the front. And Park Ji-Sung was again a scourge in Arsenal's defence. The South Korea international has now scored two goals in his last two appearances at the Emirates Stadium.

MANCHESTER CITY
It was not pretty - but Manchester City recovered from the headache of their Carling Cup exit to city rivals Manchester United to notch a much needed league win over Portsmouth. City were perhaps lucky to survive some nervy moments in the first half when Portsmouth could have gone two-nil up. City teams of old would have crumbled under the pressure but this new City team have much more mental strength than before. With this win, City moved just a point behind fourth-placed Tottenham with two games in hand. With Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Adebayor back from the African Cup of Nations, City look odds on to grab that fourth place now. And if Arsenal continue their slide of form, City could get third place.

HULL CITY
For the umpteenth time, Hull are making a habit of escaping a potential thrashing with some last-ditch and frankly lucky defending. Just like the game against Tottenham, their defence lived a charmed life against a rampant full-strength Chelsea side and limited them to just one goal. If the Tigers survive this season, this game could turn out to be the crucial turning point. Who says lowly clubs cannot claim a result against the 'big' clubs?

ZEROES

JOHN TERRY
Need we say more? The saga of John Terry and his alleged affair with French lingerie model Vanessa Perroncel has dominated the headlines this past week. We believe Sir Alex Ferguson is not involved. But he will be chuffed that Chelsea slipped up at Hull and more pressure is heaped on Terry and co. Could this be the 'Rafa Benitez' moment of the season?

CHELSEA
Chelsea would be kicking themselves after dropping points at Hull. One of the main reasons why Manchester United won last season's league title was their ability to turn over teams in the lower half of the table. Even at full-strength, Chelsea struggled to score against Hull. And they have conceded yet another goal from a set-piece - which raises even more question marks over Petr Cech and John Terry's ability to lead the defence. Perhaps Carlo Ancelotti should consider giving Cech a break as well.

ARSENAL
Spineless, defenceless and clueless - that's what Arsenal's performance were against Manchester United. Turned over by Chelsea at home earlier in the season, they again fell apart against one of their title rivals. What's made it worse for Arsenal is that this demoralising defeat meant more deluge of speculation over the future of club captain Cesc Fabregas. Barcelona and Real Madrid are both publicly courting the young Spaniard who has become one of Arsene Wenger's poster boys at the Emirates. If Fabregas exits Arsenal, it could signal the end of Wenger's reign.

SUNDERLAND
Sunderland are free-falling after they collected just win in their last 14 league games. A lackluster performance against Stoke at home gave manager Steve Bruce even more cause for concern. Darren Bent and Kenwyne Jones are undergoing a mini-goal drought and it's unlikely Benjani will help much. The main problem

PORTSMOUTH
It's all happening at Portsmouth. They are bottom of the league and six points off the safety mark and off the field they are up to their nose in debt and their fans do not know who to blame because they do not know who's in charge. Although they have sold off a couple of players during the January transfer window, Pompey are still have financial trouble. Avram Grant must be wondering what the hell he was thinking when he agreed to join them as manager. At least, we can expect more deadpanned expressions during the press conferences.

RIO FERDINAND
After receiving an extra ban for appealing a three-match ban, is Rio Ferdinand trying to be too clever by appealing again?
