Wolves vs Man United Player Ratings

Wolves vs Man United Player Ratings

We rate the players in the game between Wolves and Manchester United at the Molineux on Saturday.

By Abhishek Mehrotra

Wolves

Marcus Hahnemann - 5

Was not threatened at all throughout the match. Let down by his defence which led to the only goal of the match.

Christophe Berra - 6

Played well with Jody Craddock and made sure there were no defensive holes for the likes of Berbatov to take advantage of. Put in some excellent last ditch tackles to prevent United from running away with the game.

Jody Craddock - 4

Was excellent for the entire match except for one moment during which he got his legs in a tangle and gifted the ball to Scholes right in front of goal. Unfortunately that proved to be the difference in the end.

Stephen Ward - 3

Could not cope with the pace and skill of Antonio Valencia. Had to rely on his centre backs to bail him out of trouble frequently. Ultimatley it was cross from his side of the pitch that led to United's winner.

Ronald Zubar - 6

Did an excellent job of muzzling Evra and Gibson - allowing them no space to go wide and stretch the play.

David Jones - 5

Was in good form - and troubled Carrick and Scholes with his constant badgering. Pressed the opposition well and did not allow United to indulge in their usual quick passing game.

Adlene Guedioura - 6.5

Was excellent going forward and offered good support to his strikers at the edge of the box. Solid in defence as well - anticipating and cutting out through balls consistently.

Karl Henry - 6

Played well in an advanced position - linking up with Kevin Doyle to cause trouble within the United box. Tracked back to help out in defence when the need arose.

Matthew Jarvis - 7.5

Was the best player for the Wolves. Constantly threatened from the left and gave Wes Brown another troubling night out. Unfortunately, the quality of Wolves' finishing could not match the quality of his passes.

Kevin Foley - 4

Was poor with the ball at his feet. Got into good positions but his control let him down. Was hurried with his passing which led to the breaking down of many a Wolves attack.

Kevin Doyle - 7

Was not afraid to run at defenders and combined superbly with Jarvis on the left to keep United on their toes throughout the match.

Substitutes

Andrew Keogh - n.a

Sylvan Ebanks-Blake - n.a

Sam Vokes - 1

Missed an open goal from three yards out which would have given Wolves an invaluable point.

Manchester United

Edwin Van der Sar - 5

Was never really bothered by the Wolves.

Nemanja Vidic - 5.5

Had a tough time against Doyle and gave away free-kicks in dangerous areas outside the box. Defended very well from set-pieces though and cleared his lines quickly.

Rio Ferdinand - 5

Had a good match on his return to first team action. Kept Kevin Foley under control and made sure that the latter's link-up play with Doyle was disrupted.

Patrice Evra - 5.5

Started very sharply indeed - almost operating as a third striker for United down the left. As Wolves imposed themselves on the proceedings though, he dropped back to keep Guedioura and Henry quiet. Did a good job of it as most of Wolves attacks came down the other flank.

Wes Brown - 4

Had another poor night out after his mid week travails. Jarvis in particular was a big headache for Brown, getting in behind him and causing all sorts of trouble with his telling crosses.

Paul Scholes - 6

Notched up his 100th goal and the winner for the Red Devils with a calm finish but had a poor game overall. Could not provide United with the pace and sharpness they needed to break down a resilient Wolves side. Got dominated in midfield by a lowly rated Wolves side.

Michael Carrick - 4.5

Sprayed the ball all over the pitch and could not gel with the rest of the midfield. Got forward on occasion but was crowded out by a sae of Wolves players on the edge of the box.

Darron Gibson - 4

Was impatient in possession and tried for the spectacular too often. Was supposed to hold the ball up for the forwards but frittered away the ball on many occasions.

Nani - 3

Wasted too much time trying to pull off his tricks and allowed the Wolves to get back in numbers to defend. Did assist with a low cross but on the whole his performance was quite poor.

Antonio Valencia - 7

The best United player on the night. Was strong as usual on the right flank and gave Stephen Ward a torrid time. Sent the ball in early but Berbatov does not have the same desire as Rooney and Valencia's excellent play could not lead to anything.

Dimitar Berbatov - 5

Wolves did not allow United to dominate the centre of midfield which meant that the striker had to drift out wide to get the ball. Did not look comfortable in that position and barely contributed anything to the game.

Substitutes

Gary Neville - 6

Looked far better on the right than Wes Brown. Jarvis became less of a threat when Neville came on and that was instrumental in United dictating terms later on in the match.

Mame Biram Diouf - 4

Led many United counter-attacks down the left but was let down by poor finishing.

Ji-Sung Park - 6

Wound down the clock by taking the ball and running with it towards the corner when Wolves were desparate for possession.
