Lampard: We are more than just muscle

Lampard: We are more than just muscle

Frank Lampard insists it is a "disservice" to suggest Chelsea's success under Carlo Ancelotti has been built purely on strength and good organisation.

The Blues head to Blackburn for Wednesday night's Carling Cup quarter-final having restored their lead at the top of the Premier League to five points with Sunday's 3-0 victory at Arsenal.

It was a fifth successive league win since being beaten at Wigan, and maintained a 100 per cent record against their traditional top-four rivals.

Much has been made of the way Chelsea outmuscled the Gunners at Emirates Stadium, to leave Arsene Wenger's men some 11 points adrift, albeit with a game in hand.

However, Lampard, 31, rejects the notion the Blues have nothing else in their locker.

"We went to Arsenal and showed with our performance a bit of everything of what we are about," said the England midfielder, fit again following a thigh problem picked up on international duty.

"We kind of oozed that sort of belief in ourselves.

"We are well organised because we work very hard on the training ground.

"But we have got intelligent players, the manager works on tactics and we know that is the base from where we play - sometimes that works against us because teams do us a disservice by saying we are just an organised, strong team.

"Some of the football we play, especially on the counter-attack, is fantastic.

"We can do both sides of the game when we are at our best, and we showed that against Arsenal.

"There is a great spirit, and our two frontmen are as good as anyone in the world at the moment."

Lampard, however, warned against complacency.

"It is far too early to be over," he said.

"We have seen that teams take points off everyone else this season.

"It is great for us to be in the driving seat, but if we take our foot off the pedal and lose a couple of games and Arsenal win them then they close the gap."

Lampard accepts Chelsea's efforts in also beating Manchester United and Liverpool will count for little if they do not produce consistent results.

"To be champions, it is a mixture," he said.

"People make a big deal about the record against the big teams, but it is only if you do win your games in between that you can stay up there.

"You can always understand losing against Arsenal, Manchester United or Liverpool because they have got great quality, and last season we lost a lot of points against the big teams.

"But it was the points dropped against the not-so-big teams, when we drew, which mattered.

"You want to get the results against the big boys, but we have got to make sure that all the games in between, we stay with the right attitude."

Lampard recovered quickly from the problem he suffered while away with England for the friendly against Brazil in Qatar.

Part of the midfielder's treatment included a trip to Serbia - but not for any placenta massage which Arsenal striker Robin van Persie had on his injured ankle.

"It has been a rapid recovery really," Lampard said.

"It was very small treatment out there. For me it wasn't anything extraordinary in terms of the placenta stuff, I didn't have any of that treatment.

"The trip to Serbia was by no means a trip which didn't help me at all and in fact it was quite an experience, but the real work was done at the training ground.

"I would like to give credit to our medical team, they are the best by far and they were the ones who really did it.

"I would have expected to be fit for the Manchester City game at first, but luckily enough we have got great doctors and physios, who have worked hard with me over the last week or so."
