Van der Sar wants more
Manchester United 'keeper Edwin van der Sar is not interested in personal praise - all he cares about are trophies.
If there was one hero of Manchester United's Champions League triumph in Moscow last May, it was van der Sar.It was the veteran Dutchman who flung himself to the right and beat away Nicolas Anelka's penalty, smiling as he did so, to give United victory against Chelsea at the Luzhniki Stadium.
At 37, it represented a fabulous autumn to van der Sar's career.
But there will be no unending adulation from the Stretford End. The former Ajax man has not been at Old Trafford long enough to warrant the affection reserved for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, forever revered as the man who last won the greatest club competition for the Red Devils with his winner in 1999.
Not that Van der Sar is too concerned. He is happy to let others hog the limelight. He just wants more of the same.
"I don't care about the individual praise and I am not worried about the comparison with Ole," said Van der Sar.
"It is a team effort and I played a part in winning the trophy. That is the only thing that counts.
"As an individual, I would rather save the important one but if somebody else had scored the winner I would have been just as happy as I was when I saved Anelka's penalty.
"At this stage of my career it is all about prizes and enjoying it as much as possible."
Van der Sar gets a chance to enjoy another highlight on Friday as United look to claim the UEFA Super Cup at Zenit St Petersburg's expense.
By that time, United will know their first Champions League opponents as they look to go one step further than the Ajax side van der Sar won the competition with in 1995 when he was only 24.
The following year the Dutch outfit reached the final, only to run out of bodies and lose to Juventus in a penalty shoot-out.
No club has come closer to achieving back-to-back triumphs, although Van der Sar certainly believes United are capable.
"It won't take a big mental effort to win it again," he reflected.
"We have loads of professional players here and they all want to win, especially the big ones, so we do not need any extra effort.
"But to reach another final would be tremendous. With Ajax we lost too many players due to injury. It was the same at United in the semi-final two years ago.
"You just need a few things to go your way."
Now at the other end of his career, Van der Sar is contemplating the retirement issue.
Having quit Holland this summer with a staggering 128 caps he will, as he has done for the last couple of years, decide in December whether to continue his club career.
But unless Van der Sar suffers a major dip in form between now and the end of the year, he has indicated another year at Old Trafford is on the cards, which might be bad news for Ben Foster and Tomasz Kuszczak as they continue to play second fiddle.
For, just like Ryan Giggs, he is enjoying himself more now than ever.
"Sometimes you know it is enough," he said.
"With the national team I gave everything and now I am focused completely on United. Hopefully that will prolong my career, whether this year or next.
"I am enjoying myself now more than I have ever done.
"In 1995 I won the Champions League and reached the final again the following year. At that age, you think it is normal.
"When it dries up you wonder what is going on.
"To do it again after so many years gives you more joy and satisfaction."
