Geylang ready for Thai Cup test

Ahead of Singapore's AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers against Thailand, fans in the Lion City can look forward to the RHB Singapore Cup Final on Sunday November 8.

The highlight on the domestic football calendar will see storied local side Geylang United coming up against Thai club Bangkok Glass.

The Thais became only the second foreign club to reach the final of the region's premier club tournament when they overcame compatriots TTM Samut Sakhon with an amazing 9-4 aggregate score last week.

Coached by former Gombak United and Home United star Surachai Jaturapattarapong, himself a former Singapore Cup winner in 2003 and 2005 with the Protectors, they will aim to make history by being the first team to take the Singapore Cup out of Singapore shores. Fellow Thai side Chonburi FC was the previous foreign club finalist in 2006, losing in extra-time to Tampines Rovers.

The Glass Rabbits recently concluded their domestic season in the Thai Premier League, finishing a credible third and reached the quarter-final of the Thai FA Cup.

The Eagles meanwhile have had a mixed season, finishing sixth in the league but had a fairy-tale Road to Jalan Besar in the RHB Singapore Cup by knocking out two of the tournament's most successful teams - SAFFC and Home United in the first two rounds.

Goalkeeper Yazid Yasin has arguably been the player of their run to the final, none more so than in the two legs of the semi-final against Albirex Niigata where he single-handedly kept the Japanese at bay in regulation and extra-time as well as the shootout where he palmed away two spot kicks.

This will be Geylang's first appearance in the Singapore Cup Final after losing appearances in 2001 and 2003. A win next Sunday will also secure them their first piece of silverware since 2001 when they were last crowned league champions and with it, a spot in Asia in next season's AFC Cup.

The 3rd/4th place playoff between Albirex Niigata and TTM Samut Sakhon will take place the day before on Saturday 7 November.
