Perotti handed Argentina call-up
Sevilla midfielder Diego Perotti has won a surprise call-up to the Argentina squad for Saturday's friendly against Spain.
Argentina coach Diego Maradona handed the 21-year-old his first call-up to the national squad with Newcastle midfielder Jonas Gutierrez and Atletico Madrid forward Sergio Aguero reportedly injured.
The pair have not yet been officially released, however.
Perotti, who has played for Argentina's Under-20 side, only made his senior Sevilla debut in February. He is the son of Hugo Perotti, who played alongside Maradona at Boca Juniors in 1981.
"It was a totally unexpected call. I was in class at university. I had to leave the room to take the call," Perotti told the Estudio Futbol show on the cable channel TyC Sports.
"I really didn't expect anything. Since I was promoted to the Sevilla first team everything has happened so quickly.
"I came from the youth side to the first team, then I played in the Champions League. I never thought I was going to be called up."
Argentina, who will take on European champions Spain at the Estadio Vicente Calderon, are one of the four South American countries who have booked their place at the World Cup in South Africa next summer, alongside Brazil, Paraguay and Chile.
Argentina squad:
Sergio Romero (AZ Alkmaar), Mariano Andujar (Catania); Fabricio Coloccini (Newcastle), Martin Demichelis (Bayern Munich), Gabriel Heinze (Marseille), Nicolas Pareja (Espanyol), Cristian Ansaldi (Rubin Kazan); Jonas Gutierrez (Newcastle), Maximiliano Rodriguez (Atletico Madrid), Javier Mascherano (Liverpool), Fernando Gago (Real Madrid), Diego Perotti (Sevilla), Esteban Cambiasso (Inter Milan), Angel Di Maria (Benfica), Pablo Aimar (Benfica); Lionel Messi (Barcelona), Gonzalo Higuain (Real Madrid), Carlos Tevez (Manchester City), Sergio Aguero (Real Madrid), Ezequiel Lavezzi (Napoli).
