Beckham eyes England return

David Beckham feels the door has been left open by manager Fabio Capello for him to continue his England career.

Three Lions boss Capello caused an uproar by all but retiring the talismanic midfielder in a television interview last month, indicating the 35-year-old was too old for international football.

But the Italian has since performed something of a U-turn on his comments by suggesting a return to the national set-up could still be on the cards.

And LA Galaxy star Beckham, who has been recovering from the Achilles tendon injury which ruled him out of this year's World Cup, says he has every hope of pulling on the England jersey once more when fully fit.

"He (Capello) has made me aware all the way through being manager that if you're performing and you're playing well then you have a chance of being in the squad," Beckham told Sky Sports News.

"The thing about my situation now is just getting back on the field and getting back fit, then what happens after that we'll see."

Beckham says Capello contacted him to clear up any misunderstanding over his international future, and insists his relationship with the Italian is still strong.

"Obviously it was a surprise at the time but I spoke to him shortly after that and he explained everything to me and it was brushed under the carpet, so to speak," added Beckham.

"I've always had a good relationship with Fabio and that's not changed.

"Things get said, things get taken out of proportion and turned around but at the end of the day the manager's got a job to do and he's doing it well and the lads are repaying that.

"Like I said, I've always supported him as a manager and the staff he's got down there, and he's always supported me.

"He's always looked after me in many ways and I've got the upmost respect for him."

Galaxy activated David Beckham from their disabled list on Thursday, making him eligible for the club's MLS home match against Columbus on Saturday.
