Rio backs Redknapp for England
Rio Ferdinand joined Wayne Rooney on Friday in endorsing Harry Redknapp as his choice to become England's new manager.
Former captain Ferdinand, hoping to play for his country at Euro 2012 this summer, believes his former West Ham boss is the man best suited to succeed Fabio Capello, who dramatically quit on Wednesday night.
Manchester United defender Ferdinand wrote on Twitter: "I think we need an English manager now, we don't need anything else lost in translation....Harry Redknapp would be my choice by a distance."
Capello resigned following showdown talks with Football Association chairman David Bernstein at Wembley over the FA's decision to go over his head and strip John Terry of the England captaincy.
Tottenham boss Redknapp was cleared of tax evasion charges earlier this week.
Rooney wrote on Twitter on Wednesday night: "Gutted capello has quit. Good guy and top coach. Got to be english to replace him. Harry redknapp for me."
Former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton agreed, telling Sky News: "I think it's maybe Harry's time. He plays the game the right way."
The FA will hold a press conference at 1200 on Friday at which they are expected to provide more information on Capello's departure.
Stoke manager Tony Pulis on Friday reiterated his view that the FA were wrong to take the decision on Terry out of Capello's hands.
"I think the manager should have the final say on football matters - that is what the manager is for, full stop," he said.
He added: "I think Capello has (resigned) as a matter of principle. He has been a top manager - I don't think anyone can question his record through his career.
"He has managed some great football clubs and been successful at them, and it is disappointing, because he most probably would have had the majority of his team in place ready to go.
"Whether they had done well or been indifferent, you would have to wait and see. But for me, the manager should always be in charge of football matters until he is sacked."
Nevertheless Pulis believes Redknapp would be the best choice to succeed the Italian, but would be surprised if he walked away from Spurs.
"The situation with Harry is pretty unique in lots of respects. I think he has got the media on his side, people in football on his side and supporters on his side. So he has to get the job!" the Welshman added.
"The big issue here with the whole situation is what Harry wants to do. He has just been through a traumatic couple of weeks and the time leading up to the case.
"He has got through that and he will be desperate now just to get back to what he is good at, and that is being the manager of a football club.
"Tottenham have been very successful under him and I'd be very surprised if he walked away from that at this present moment."
Norwich manager Paul Lambert was shocked at Capello's resignation and believes he was badly treated by the Football Association when he was not consulted before Terry was stripped of the captaincy.
Lambert said: "I was surprised as anyone else. He (Capello) had earned the right to take the team to the European Championships.
"If you are not making the decision who your captain is then that becomes a major, major issue. He should have been left alone to make the decisions.
"What's the point of having the manager? He's the one who should dictate who is playing and who's not playing and who is the captain."
