Spain reflects on 'painful day'
Wednesday's tragic plane crash in Madrid overshadowed the debut of Spain's new coach Vicente del Bosque.
The former Real Madrid coach admitted after his side's 3-0 friendly win over Denmark that events back in Spain had made it a "very painful day".There was some doubt about whether the match in Copenhagen would go ahead following the disaster at Madrid's Barajas airport earlier in the day left more than 150 people dead and only a handful of survivors.
It was decided the match would be played, but without a planned tribute to Spain in their first match since their European Championship success, while there was also a minute's silence and both teams wore black armbands as a mark of respect for the victims of the tragedy.
"It has been a very painful day for the fatal accident and I want to send my condolences to all the families of the victims," said Del Bosque after the friendly.
Regarding the match, Del Bosque admitted he has enjoyed a "comfortable" start to life in the Spain hotseat after seeing his side produce a second-half masterclass to defeat the Danes.
It is questionable whether the former Real Madrid boss would have felt the same way if the second half of the match had followed the pattern as the first, though, with the Spanish looking sluggish and second-best early on.
However, second-half goals from Xabi Alonso, who netted a brace, and his fellow midfielder Xavi wrapped up what was ultimately a convincing victory in a match that also saw Diego Capel and Andoni Iraola given their debuts.
"We were the better team in the second half but Denmark were better in the first," said Del Bosque, who took over the reins from Luis Aragones.
"We started slowly. You need to be consistent. In the first half we could have been trailing."
He added: "I felt comfortable. I've had the utmost co-operation from everyone and all the players. I am very happy about the victory and because we have given debuts to two players I think have deserved it."
