Damiano Tommasi joins QPR

Former Roma and Italy international Damiano Tommasi has joined English Championship club Queens Park Rangers.

The 34-year-old midfielder, a free agent following his release from Spanish side Levante in the summer, has signed until the end of the season.

The player was unveiled on Wednesday, pictured alongside manager Iain Dowie and club chairman Flavio Briatori, the Italian Formula One magnate who bought the club last year in partnership with Bernie Ecclestone.

"The signing of Damiano adds great experience to the squad," Dowie told www.qpr.co.uk.

"He has played at the highest level for club and country, and to have a player of that calibre available can only be good for QPR.

"We've got some fantastic young talent in the squad and training with someone of Damiano's stature will be of huge benefit to them, I'm sure. In the short term, he could prove to be very useful to us."

Tommasi made more than 250 appearances in 10 years with Roma, winning the Italian championship in 2001.

He was capped 25 times by Italy and played in all four of the Azzurri's matches in the 2002 World Cup.

Briatori owns around a third of the shares in QPR, having sold a portion of his original 54% holding to billionaire Lakshmi Mittal. Ecclestone owns a 15% share.
