Terry: England future is bright

Captain John Terry believes the future is bright for England after watching Arsenal's youngsters destroy Sheffield United.

However, he insists English youngsters are blossoming all over the country and not just in north London.

The Gunners' 6-0 Carlingf Cup victory was achieved by a team with an average age of just 19 and including six young Englishmen.

"I've been very encouraged by seeing that game and it's great for English football," said the Chelsea defender, speaking at a sponsoredbyyou.com event organised by England sponsors Nationwide Building Society.

"We're seeing Arsene Wenger having the confidence to put his young players out but it's not just Arsenal.

"Our reserves at Chelsea, with a lot of English players, went to Arsenal recently and beat them.

"We've got a lot of good English youngsters at our place as well and I'm sure a lot of other teams have too.

"I think managers want to see young English players do well. Certainly at our place I love it when the young English guys come over and really make a big impact in training.

"These guys don't stay in their shell, they play their game and I think we all like to see it.

"The talent is out there and right now managers are having the confidence to put them in and give them a chance.

"It's a great advert for English football and good news for England. Young players coming through all over the country keeps us all on our toes."

England are already on a high after beating Croatia 4-1 in a World Cup qualifier in Zagreb which leaves them top of their qualifying group.

Now they face Kazakhstan at home and Belarus away in just over two weeks' time and all the attention will be on another young talent - 19-year-old hat-trick hero Theo Walcott.

His display in Zagreb gives other young English teenagers hope they can earn a call-up to the senior squad if they perform well enough at club level.

Terry added: "I think the manager (Fabio Capello) has showed with the squads he's picked that he'll select you if you do well.

"Take Jimmy Bullard, he's been playing great football in the Premier League and it's been noticed by the manager.

"I think that's a sign for everyone, not just the players at big clubs but all clubs, no matter what age, that if you do well and impress him he's going to have the confidence to select you."

The result against Croatia, and the signs of future talent coming through, gives Terry hope England are now on the right track.

"I'm very confident about the future. We've always known - and I think that's why the fans have been frustrated - that we've got the players and the manager to compete with the top teams at the top level," he added.

"So we have to start doing it on a regular basis. We need to come together and gel at international level and that's what we're starting to do.

"It (victory over Croatia) was definitely a step forward and hopefully that's a turning point."
