Steelers lift Korean FA Cup

Pohang Steelers defeated Gyeongnam FC 2-0 to win the Korean FA Cup final and secure a place in the 2009 Asian Champions League.

An early strike from Hwang Jin-sung and a goal 12 minutes from time by Kim Jae-sung gave the 2007 K-League champions victory.

Hwang fired home from close range with just three minutes gone at Jeju Stadium following a great run from Choi Hyo-jin, who burst in the area before delivering a low cross.

Although Gyeongnam threatened at times and hit the crossbar in the second-half, it was Pohang who came out on top as Kim headed home late on to spark wild celebrations.

"Everyone played well today but Hwang Jin-sung had a great game and got the opening goal that settled us down early in the game," said Pohang coach Sergio Farias.

After disappointing in this year`s edition of the Asian Champions League, Farias is hopeful of a much better performance in the revamped 2009 version.

"This year, our target was to qualify for the AFC Champions League and we have now made sure of that," the Brazilian added.

"We didn't perform to the best of our ability in the competition in 2008 but we hope to get better results next time. We want to climb to the top of Asian football."
