Burnley devastated after Cup loss

Burnley hero Robbie Blake admitted to a feeling of "devastation" after Tottenham snatched a win at the end of a dramatic tie.

Leading 4-1 from the first leg, it looked likely to be a regulation night for Spurs but Blake scored in the first half before setting up Chris McCann and Jay Rodriguez to take the game into extra-time.

Burnley were leading on away goals and looking set to celebrate a Wembley final against Manchester United but Roman Pavlyuchenko and Jermain Defoe struck in the final three minutes to earn Spurs a 3-2 defeat on the night and 6-4 victory on aggregate.

Man-of-the-match Blake told Sky Sports 1: "We worked so hard to get in the game and we deserved to be 3-0 ahead. But they're class players and they punished tired legs at the end.

"It's hard to take being so close."

Burnley boss Owen Coyle urged his players to be proud of their efforts and use the heartbreak to inspire their Coca-Cola Championship promotion bid.

"It's gut-wrenching," he told Sky Sports. "No-one gave us a chance beforehand but we believed we could score the first goal and make it a game to remember and we did that.

"All credit to the players, they were magnificent and they should be walking out very proud of the performance they gave.

"It's not always the better side that wins. I'm disappointed for them but we've got a big season in the Championship so we have to dust ourselves down and come back stronger."

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp admitted he was fearing the worst but insisted his side do deserve their place at Wembley.

"I thought we were dead and buried," he told Sky Sports. "You're thinking 'what do we do?'. But we showed character and we came back. I was disappointed (with the performance), of course.

"Burnley were terrific, they showed great character, but we've had some great performances (in the Carling Cup), beating Liverpool, and we deserve to be there."

Redknapp has been busy in the transfer market as he attempts to lead Spurs away from the Barclays Premier League relegation zone.

Today he wrapped up the signing of Wilson Palacios, subject to a work permit, but Redknapp dismissed reports a bid has been made for Chelsea keeper Carlo Cudicini.

"I don't know anything about Cudicini," he added.

Redknapp feels Palacios will give Spurs an edge they have been missing - and warned some of his players their White Hart Lane futures are in doubt.

He added: "That's what I need, that's why I bought him (Palacios). They should be fighting for their lives to stay at a great club like Tottenham. Their futures are on the line, some of them."

With one final in the bag, Redknapp also revealed he will rest his star names for Tottenham's FA Cup fourth-round trip to Manchester United on Saturday.

"I'm really going to send a real mismatched side up there," he said. "We've played extra-time tonight and we're out on our feet. I can't afford any more injuries."
