Gerets tight-lipped over future

Gerets tight-lipped over future

Belgium legend Eric Gerets is continuing to fend off questions about his future as coach of Ligue 1 giants Marseille.

Gerets, whose contract at OM expires in the summer, confirmed a fortnight ago he would reveal at the end of March whether he was going to stay at the club beyond this season.

However, he does not believe now is the right time to discuss his future, saying: "There are more important things ahead of us.

"We have important matches on Sunday and next week. At a given moment, I will speak to you about what is going to happen but for the moment, it's St Etienne and nothing else.

"My future will wait."

OM, who are second in the Ligue 1 table and just a point behind leaders Lyon, visit Les Verts on Sunday night.

They are then away at Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk the following Thursday in the first leg of their UEFA Cup quarter-final.

Gerets has also denied speculation he has opened talks with Primera Liga side Sevilla.

"I said (in Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad) that I really liked Sevilla - so people have said I was in contact with them. I am not in contact with Sevilla," he added.

"It's a good team and an Andalusian town where it is always nice weather. That's the reason I mentioned Sevilla.

"But neither the president, the coach nor the supporters of the club have contacted me."

Gerets, who joined Marseille from Galatasaray in September 2007, has turned the Mediterranean side into title contenders and their fans are keen for him to extend his deal at the Stade Velodrome.

"That doesn't leave me indifferent but I have the feeling that people are giving more than I can give back, even if I am trying to give my all," the former Belgium defender said.

"That puts a pressure on my shoulders because this year, I really want to do something with my players to thank them for the way I can live out here.

"It is quite exceptional. After leaving Turkey, I never thought I would rediscover this fervour."
