Terry: Things are going well

John Terry has hailed England's performance against Ukraine saying they displayed "good character and desire" to win.

England and Ukraine were locked at 1-1 until the skipper made his decision goal five minutes from time to deal Ukraine a 2-1 defeat at Wembley.

Former Chelsea teammate Andriy Shevchenko's equaliser threatened to end England's perfect World Cup qualifying record after he cancelled out Peter Crouch's opener.

Terry told reporters: "I think we deserved it overall.

"We showed good character to come back and win it.

"There was great fight and desire from the lads. When it goes to 1-1 we showed we're not going to settle for a draw.

"They've got a game in hand on us but we're in a great position and it was another great win tonight.

"We've got Kazakhstan away and Andorra at home so it's two tough games next but hopefully six points. At the moment things are going well."

England bossed most of the game but remained in second gear once Peter Crouch volleyed a 29th-minute opener.

But Shevchenko's leveller sparked a late rally, peaked by Terry stealing in at the far post to send Wembley into raptures.
