McClaren: I don't watch England

Steve McClaren is not surprised by England's current success - although he no longer watches the team in action.

McClaren was sacked after failing to lead England to the finals of Euro 2008 and was subsequently succeeded by Fabio Capello.

The Italian has introduced a number of strict guidelines which have won approval from the likes of Frank Lampard and David James, and England now head their World Cup qualifying group with a 100% record.

The former Middlesbrough boss endured a difficult tenure as England coach, enduring criticism from both the press and the public, but has now found success with FC Twente in Holland.

When asked if he watches England games, McClaren told BBC Radio Five Live's Sportsweek programme: "I dont. I tend to be looking at other games.

"I was at the Holland game on Wednesday looking for players so I tend to look at them to scout for FC Twente for next season."

The 47-year-old insists he has always felt England could succeed but that he was hampered by a number of things out of his control, such as injuries.

He continued: "During my time with England under Sven (Goran Eriksson) and managing, when people asked me could this team win a major tournament I always said yes they could.

"They had the ability, they had the talent, the only thing was injuries and suspensions, sendings off, a lack of fresh players cost you in tournaments and that is what happened.

"Everyone is bound to speculate as England have made a very good start and they will qualify.

"We suffered with injuries in very important games, especially towards the end."

Neither would McClaren be drawn on comparisons with Capello's disciplinarian approach.

"I don't know what Capello is doing," he continued.

"Each manager is different.

"You are dealing with England players, with top professionals who have responsibilities.

"You have to give them a certain amount of trust and responsibility and that is what you do.

"I never felt that was an issue, we never had any disciplinary problems with any player."
