Harford: Our magnificent fans!
Mick Harford saluted Luton's supporters who witnessed their Johnstone's Paint Trophy final victory over Scunthorpe.
Around 40,000 Hatters fans made the journey down the M1 to watch their side triumph in a pulsating five-goal thriller with extra-time needed to separate the two teams.Gary Hooper fired Scunthorpe in front early on, only for Chris Martin and Tom Craddock to put League Two's bottom club ahead.
Grant McCann's superb late leveller sent the tie into extra-time where substitute Claude Gnakpa grabbed the winner as he lobbed home in the 95th minute.
Luton are facing almost certain relegation after having 30 points deducted at the start of the season, but Harford could not hide his delight after an emotional afternoon.
He told Sky Sports: "It's been a tough season for us, the players have worked their socks off and we try and play football the right way.
"I thought it was a fantastic advert for lower league football. Some of the goals that were scored today were frightening for this level of football and a credit to both sets of players.
"Overall, I thought we deserved it and I'm just delighted for our magnificent fans.
"It tells you about the camaraderie and togetherness and it was typified by Kevin Nicholls who was deservedly man of the match.
"It's a massive achievement for this football club, we've won trophies before but this is definitely up there."
Scunthorpe counterpart Nigel Adkins has urged his players to learn from their Wembley woe and ensure that if they have a chance of redemption they grasp it with both hands.
The Iron are pushing for a play-off place in League One and Adkins is eager for his players to be Wembley winners in the near future.
He said: "We haven't performed to the level we want to normally perform to, but credit to Luton Town. We gave poor goals away with poor defending as we have most of the time this season.
"It's disappointing, but we've got a very young group of players and they will learn about themselves and we've got to utilise this experience now, bottle up the horrible feeling that you've got inside your stomach.
"We've got to be gracious in defeat because Luton have done ever so well. But we've got to make sure that next time we come here, hopefully in the play-off final, we win the occasion."
