Van Gaal in national frame
The Belgian Football Association claim AZ Alkmaar coach Louis Van Gaal is a serious contender for the national position.
RBFA president François De Keersmaecker met the former Barcelona and Holland coach on Tuesday and is confident a deal could be struck.
"We had a positive conversation," De Keersmaecker said in a statement
"We're going to examine a plan later and temporarily refrain from making any comment".
Van Gaal has a contract until 2010 with AZ, with whom he has recently clinched the Eredivisie title.
"Combining the two jobs could be an option" added De Keersmaecker in Het Laatste Nieuws newspaper.
"That's not ideal but it could specially be an exception for some of the candidates.
"I neither deny nor confirm that it could be done with Van Gaal but a coach could have such a big name that he could eventually also train a club."
Last week Belgium legends Michel Preud'homme and Eric Gerets turned down approaches to become their country's new head coaches.
Former head coach Rene Vandereycken was sacked following back-to-back defeats against Bosnia Herzegovina last month.
