Stijn Schaars halts AZ talks

AZ Alkmaar midfielder Stijn Schaars has put contract talks on hold until the future of coach Louis van Gaal is determined.

Van Gaal has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich, following his success in leading AZ to the Eredivisie title.

Schaars' agent, Karel Jansen, has been involved in negotiations with AZ since the start of the year.

Jansen said: "We were coming closer and closer to an agreement, but when we heard the news about Van Gaal we decided to postpone the talks for the time being."

Bayern sacked Jurgen Klinsmann last month, since when Jupp Heynckes has been in temporary charge, and they have confirmed their interest in recruiting Van Gaal.

Holland international Schaars, 25, joined AZ from Vitesse Arnham in 2005. Reports in Holland have claimed he could also move to Bayern this summer.
