Gerets sets sights on Lyon

Marseille coach Eric Gerets is giving his full attention to Sunday's crunch showdown against defending champions Lyon.

OM were convincing winners at the Stade du Ray last night, strike duo Mamadou Niang and Brandao scoring the goals either side of the break for a 2-0 victory at Nice to stay top of Ligue 1.

With title rivals Bordeaux also triumphing last night, 2-1 at Valenciennes, only goal difference is keeping OM above Les Girondins with three rounds of fixtures remaining.

But while Bordeaux face an easy-looking home match against Le Mans on Saturday, Marseille play host to seven-time reigning champions Lyon, whose title is slipping from their grasp. Les Gones are currently seven points adrift in third.

"We are now thinking of Sunday's match - there are a few little knocks but even with a broken leg, nobody would want to miss this game," said Gerets.

"That is understandable. We are going to see how we recover and prepare for this important Lyon match.

"We have won a vital match here. But I fear we will have to win our last three matches and even by winning them, we are still not assured of being champions."

Gerets admitted last night's success had been "a lot easier than expected", with OM dominating from start to finish against a mid-table Nice side who have little to play for between now and the end of the season.

"It was a great performance by us, one of our best this season away from home," the Belgian coach said.

"Winning like this at Nice, it is not insignificant. If I have to reproach my players, it's that we were maybe not precise enough with our final pass. If so, we could have scored three or four goals."

Gerets saw defenders Laurent Bonnart and Taye Taiwo return to action after injury setbacks, the full-backs playing the full 90 minutes last night.
