Ligue 1 Weekend Preview

Marseille will look to boost their Ligue 1 title chances - and end those of seven-time reigning champions Lyon.

They will want nothing but a victory over Les Gones at the Stade Velodrome on Sunday.

OM remain on course for a first domestic title since 1992 thanks to their 2-0 win at Nice yesterday, keeping them above second-placed Bordeaux at the summit on goal difference.

Les Girondins have the easier run-in of the joint leaders but Marseille will be confident of going on and completing the job should they down the faltering champions in the league's stand-out match in the 36th round of fixtures.

OM goalkeeper Steve Mandanda said: "We are approaching something huge and everyone is completely concentrated and motivated.

"We are not relaxing. The last three matches are very important and we can't allow ourselves to break up and not be fully focused.

"We are not getting too excited, because there is a vital match on Sunday."

OM are unbeaten in their last 13 matches, having won 10 of them. The three games they have drawn in that run have all come at home, against Le Mans, Valenciennes and Toulouse.

Marseille coach Eric Gerets admits his side's home form could be better, adding: "If we had a better record at home to please our fans, we would already be champions."

Lyon thrashed Nantes 3-0 on Tuesday but are still seven points off the pace and will relinquish their title if they do not win this weekend.

Their seven-year grasp on the crown could even have slipped by then - Bordeaux take on Le Mans on Saturday evening and a success for Les Girondins would put them top for 24 hours at least.

Les Gones will now be concentrating on securing third spot and a place in next season's Champions League. They are only a point clear of fourth-placed Paris St Germain, who host Auxerre on Saturday.

The battle for fifth place and the league's second and final Europa League berth is just as intriguing, with Toulouse, Lille and Rennes separated by only two points.

Les Violets currently occupy fifth position and they are away at fourth-bottom St Etienne on Saturday.

On Sunday, Lille are at home to Nice and Rennes travel to second-bottom Nantes, who are in desperate need of a win as they look to escape the drop.

With third-bottom Caen taking on Lyon and Bordeaux in their last two matches, the northerners probably need to beat Sochaux if they are to have any chance of staying up. Sochaux are 16th, two points and two places above Caen, after their 3-0 rout of Monaco yesterday.

Elsewhere on Saturday, already-relegated Le Havre are at Lorient, Monaco welcome Valenciennes and Grenoble entertain Nancy.
