Shandong eye last 16 in ACL

Shandong Luneng have their ACL destiny in their own hands, with victory over Sriwijaya enough to secure a place in the last 16.

A win for Ljubisa Tumbakovic's side over the Indonesians, who have already been eliminated after failing to pick up a point from five games, would send the Chinese Super League side through to the knockout stage as runners up behind group winners and defending Asian champions Gamba Osaka.

A lesser result could open the door for South Korea's FC Seoul and, although they face a Gamba side set to rest several players, Shandong should secure their place with victory in Palembang.

"We will stop at nothing and the game is what this competition is about. Everything is going down to this match and my players know it," said Tumbakovic.

"I have stressed that our target is to secure a spot in the next round and we are ready to have it at the expense of our opponents."

Sriwijaya have shipped 22 goals in five games while scoring just three, but coach Rahmad Darmawan is refusing to throw in the towel.

"First and foremost, our fans deserve something better as they have been brilliant for us the entire season," said Darmawan.

"Secondly, we must keep showing our resilience at all levels because we have become a big Indonesian team with our achievements in the last few years and people need to see it."

Seoul must end Gamba's 100% record with at least a point at the Expo '70 Commemoration Park Stadium.

Their hopes have been boosted by the news that striker Leandro, who has scored eight goals in five outings in the competition, is ruled out having picked up a hamstring injury in Saturday's goalless draw with Urawa Reds, while Japan midfielder Yasuhito Endo and Brazilian midfielder Luca are both suspended.

"Shandong's result is important, but the more important thing for us is to win our game," said Seoul's former Turkey manager Senol Gunes. "You never know what's going to happen in football."

Gamba coach Akira Nishino is set to hand 17-year-old Takashi Usami his professional debut, while the likes of Hideo Hashimoto and Takumi Shimohira, who picked up yellow cards in the previous round, are set to be rested to ensure their availability for the last 16.

"This is a good opportunity for our younger players who have been on bench to start the game," said Nishino.

"It's not because I want to rest some of our regular players. This is not a game that does not count for us."
