Van Gaal tipped for Bayern success
Departing Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes has tipped his successor to bring the Bundesliga title back to the Allianz Arena.
Heynckes presided over the final five games of the season at Bayern on an interim basis following the sacking of Jurgen Klinsmann and enjoyed mixed results.
The club lost out to Wolfsburg in the race for the Bundesliga but did, at least, secure automatic qualification for next season's Champions League by finishing second.
Van Gaal arrives in Munich fresh from leading AZ Alkmaar to the Eredivisie crown and Heynckes believes the former Barcelona boss can bring similar success to the Bavarian giants.
"I rate Van Gaal highly. He is a knowledgeable man who works accurately, has a clear mind and, in his Barcelona days, he had them playing some fantastic football," he told the Bayern website.
"I have every faith in him leading FC Bayern to titles."
Although Heynckes has only been with Bayern for six weeks, he was instrumental in the appointment of the Dutchman.
"I recommended Van Gaal to (general manager) Uli Hoeness," he said. "I think it is important for FC Bayern that they have a footballing technician again.
"A coach should never be everybody's darling, but I have heard that he gets on well with the players.
"You need to get used to him, but that is the case with every coach."
Heynckes' final game in charge was last night's 2-0 friendly win against Fortuna Sittard, a match overshadowed by violence with Bayern fans pelted with stones by home supporters.
