Africa's big boys are in trouble

Cameroon, Morocco, Mali and Egypt were left with plenty of work to do after the second round of World Cup Qualifiers.

The biggest shock of the day came in Blida were the continental champions were stunned 3-1 by their north African rivals Algeria.

The Pharaohs, who could only draw their opening game of Group C at home to Zambia, looked on course for at least a point until two goals in four minutes changed the course of the game.

First Karim Matmour (60) fired the hosts in front, followed by Abdelkader Ghezzal (64) doubling the advantage.

Rafik Djebbour (77) made it 3-0 shortly after, before Mohamed Aboutrika (87) scored a late consolation for the visitors.

Egypt are now bottom of the group alongside Rwanda with a single point, while Algeria and the Zambians have four points apiece.

In Yaounde, Cameroon, who lost their first match to Togo 1-0, again failed to score in a goalless draw against the Moroccans.

The point each gets the pair off the mark in Group A, but they now trail leaders Gabon (six) by five points, with Togo (three) in second place.

In Group B, a brace from substitute Victor Obinna helped Nigeria claim their first win with an emphatic 3-0 scoreline against Kenya in Abuja.

After Ikechukwu Uche opened the scoring in the second minute, the Super Eagles struggled to penetrate the visiting defence until the introduction of the Inter Milan striker just short of the hour mark.

He then scored in the 73rd and 77th minutes, the first from the penalty spot, to lift his side into second spot on four points, two behind leaders Tunisia.

Ghana needed two late goals in Bamako to increase their grip at the top of Group D.

With their game against Mali deadlocked at 0-0 and just 23 minutes remaining, Kwadwo Asamoah (67) and Matthew Amoah (79) claimed the crucial strikes for the Black Stars to help lift them to a 2-0 win.

The three points helped them move to six points, three more than Benin, who overcame Sudan 1-0.

Razak Omotoyossi was the hero for the Squirrels scoring the only goal of the game after 19 minutes.

Stephen Keshi's Mali, meanwhile, prop up the pool with a single point from two games.

Finally, Ivory Coast remain in charge of Group E after a 2-1 win over Guinea in Conakry.

The game was scoreless until the closing minutes of the first half when Bakari Kone (45) broke the deadlock, but Sambegou Bangoura (63) equalised for the hosts.

However, Ndri Romaric (72) scored the winner to help the Elephants make it two wins from two.
