John Terry: I have a dream

Skipper John Terry has revealed his dream to emulate Bobby Moore and lift the World Cup.

Terry comes from the same part of Essex as the man who lifted football's most coveted trophy in 1966.

England are on the verge of clinching a place in the 2010 finals and could chalk up a seventh straight win in their qualifying group if they defeat bottom-placed Andorra at Wembley on Wednesday evening.

But Terry, although content with the progress made under Fabio Capello, does not want England to think too far ahead.

Terry said: "I dream of emulating what Bobby Moore did. That's been the case ever since I was growing up and now I'm England captain and things are going well for us.

"That day in 1966 is one the country will remember for ever. All those players were heroes and, of course, we want to emulate what they achieved.

"If we can manage that that, it will be fantastic for everyone and we know what it would mean to everyone.

"But I just don't want anyone, including the players, to get over-excited with how well we are doing. Hopefully we will beat Andorra and results will go our way in the other games to help us.

"Winning the World Cup is something we all dream of but we are keeping our feet firmly on the ground because we've gone into tournaments before thinking too far ahead, World Cups and European Championships."

Terry admits England are in a better position than they envisaged with their destiny in their own hands in terms of reaching next summer's finals.

And he believes the defeat by Euro 2008 winners Spain in Seville in February acted as a big wake-up call to the squad.

He said: "I think we are almost where we want to be. We have got ourselves into a great position. We started with a difficult couple of away games, like Croatia, which we came through.

"We are in a better position than we all thought but we are playing well and full of confidence and we are in a good position.

"I think Spain are the yardstick for us and we have said that since we played them. That was probably a wake-up call for us in terms of how far we've got to come.

"But even since then, we have improved things. We have looked at that video and what we need to improve but, looking at the squad, all over the pitch I think we can improve.

"I think collectively over the last year we have been much better, we have been working for each other a lot more."

Terry added: "In terms of the atmosphere in the training camp, something is different. There is a different feeling in the air.

"I am not sure what you put that down to. Obviously winning makes people happy and makes it a lot more easier.

"But at the same time, things are still tough. We know we are not there yet but we are going in the right direction which is the main thing."

Terry wants England to put on a performance for the supporters who may struggle to attend the Andorran game because of a 48 hour tube in London strike which is due to start this evening.

Fears that the game may not go ahead or be staged behind closed doors have been allayed.

Terry said: "It is fantastic news that the game is going ahead and hopefully as many fans as possible can get there.

"It is going to be a harder journey for the fans and that puts us under extra pressure to deliver a performance.

"We understand it is going to be very difficult for the fans to get there.

"If they can't, it is maybe a chance for the players to turn around and say thanks to the fans and maybe repay them with a good performance and a win, no matter how many people are there.

"We understand they are going to try their best. We saw that with 1300 of them travelling all the way to Kazakhstan. We know always we are going to get the support from the England fans.

"It is maybe a chance to pay them back for all their hard work that they have given us."
