Roda JC technical director Martin van Geel has warned the club face a season of fighting relegation.

Roda beat the drop last term thanks to a penalty shoot-out win over Cambuur Leeuwarden in the promotion/relegation play-offs and Van Geel expects this campaign to be just as tough.

"Our goal is to stay in the Eredivisie - and that's it," Van Geel told NOS.

"We must understand where we are at the moment and grow from that to be a financially stable club and from that grow further. So we are back to square one for a while."

Despite the departure of Marcel Meeuwis and the probable loss of Sekou Cisse to either Feyenoord or FC Twente - Van Geel confirmed Roda are in talks with both clubs about the player - he insists the mood at Roda is not downbeat.

He added: "In Dutch football at the moment the differences between clubs are small. When you are inventive, when you can create the right atmosphere, with the right people in the right places, you can climb a few places ."
